Leonard Nimoy, Spock of ‘Star Trek,’ Dies at 83

TRIBUTE VIDEO: Leonard Nimoy, best known for playing the character Spock in the Star Trek television shows and films, died at 83.

LOS ANGELES - Leonard Simon Nimoy lived up to his longtime catchphrase: Live long and prosper. Having achieved success in many arenas during his lifetime, the actor, director, writer and photographer has died at age 83. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, reportedly confirmed his death to the New York Times, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Most widely known for his performance as half-human, half-Vulcan science officer Spock on the classic sci-fi TV show “Star Trek” and its many subsequent film and videogame incarnations, Nimoy was also a successful director, helming “Star Trek” pics “The Search for Spock” and “The Voyage Home,” as well as non-“Star Trek” fare; an accomplished stage actor; a published writer and poet; and a noted photographer. He also dabbled in singing and songwriting.

But despite his varied talents, Nimoy will forever be linked with the logical Mr. Spock. Spotted by “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry when he appeared on Roddenberry’s NBC Marine Corps. skein “The Lieutenant,” Nimoy was offered the role of Spock and co-starred in the 1965 “Star Trek” pilot “The Cage.” NBC execs liked the concept but thought the pilot too cerebral, so they ordered a second pilot of the Desilu production with some script and cast changes (only Nimoy made it through both pilots). The series finally bowed on the Peacock in the fall of 1966. After three seasons, it was canceled in 1969 but would go on to be a hit in syndication, spawning films and other TV incarnations and gaining a huge following of fans known as Trekkers or Trekkies.

Leonard Nimoy was born in Boston, Massachusetts; his parents were Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine, and the language at home was Yiddish. He developed an interest in acting at an early age, first appearing on stage at 8 in a production of “Hansel and Gretel.” He took drama classes for a while at Boston College, and after leaving home to pursue his career in Hollywood, he landed his first lead role in the 1952 film “Kid Monk Baroni.” ... New York City’s First Deaf Taxi Drivers

Exclusive Interviews: Meet one of New York City’s first Deaf uber drivers.

NEW YORK CITY - Pin Lu Was an accountant before ferrying passengers; ‘Deaf people are good drivers because they focus and pay attention’ Many initially convey surprise or concern when they discover he can’t hear, but he said being Deaf gives him an advantage in honk-filled. In many ways, Pin Lu is a typical UberX driver.

He uses his own car, complete with a crocheted owl dangling from the rearview mirror, to ferry passengers who hail him via the popular ride-sharing app.

He often works long hours, saving to start his own business someday. And he takes pride in his user ratings, saying he has earned 4.82 out of a possible 5 stars. But when New Yorkers step into Mr. Lu’s green 2011 Honda Accord, many are surprised to be handed a note asking them to type a destination into the GPS.

Mr. Lu, the note explains, is Deaf.

“Let me know if you have a preferred route by using your hand motion as direction,” it reads. “If you have any questions, knock your hand to my shoulder. Write/type note to me as communication.”

Uber Technologies Inc. estimates it has about 40 Deaf “driver-partners” across the U.S. and predicts that number is likely to grow as the company expands into new markets.

Mr. Lu, a spokeswoman said, is one of its first in the New York area.

Mr. Lu, 29 years old, was born without hearing in Fuzhou, China, and immigrated to Queens, New York with his family when he was 10.

After earning an accounting degree from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2011, he spent about two years doing accounting work for the Defense Department in Rome, N.Y., but he grew tired of small-town life “in the middle of nowhere,” he says.

Mr. Lu moved back to the New York area and switched paths, becoming a driver for Uber and occasionally for its competitor Lyft, earning his Taxi and Limousine Commission license in July.

Most weeks, he said, he now spends five to seven days a week seven to 10 hours a day behind the wheel.

Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing people in New York can get a driver's license with a restriction specifying they need a hearing aid or a full-view rearview mirror, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission doesn’t register or track the disabilities of its licensees, a representative said... Read more: The Wall Street Journal: Meet One of New York City’s First Deaf Uber Drivers

Deaf People Hears For The First Time Compilation

VIDEO: Deaf babies and Deaf people hears sound for the first time compilation all in one place.

The Internet is peppered with countless emotional and powerful videos of someone who does, then few past weeks ago, you probably watched the wildly popular the videos of "Hears For The First Time" in these days, Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who, after receiving hearing implantations, was able to hear for the first time.

Cochlear/Hearing Implantations may help provide hearing in patients who are Deaf because of damage to sensory hair cells in their cochleas. In those patients, the implants often can enable sufficient hearing for better understanding of speech. The quality of sound is different from natural hearing, with less sound information being received and processed by the brain.

Not only are we touched by this, but we are inspired beyond measure by the life-changing advances in technology. Enjoy to watch the compilation of reactions at the precise moment a lab technician turns on the implant devices.

Brainstem Implants Help Deaf Children Hear

VIDEO: Deaf children who can't use the older technology of cochlear implants might be helped with a brainstem implant.

LOS ANGELES - At age 3, Angelica Lopez is helping to break a sound barrier for Deaf children.

Born without working auditory nerves, she can detect sounds for the first time and start to mimic them after undergoing brain surgery to implant a device that bypasses missing wiring in her inner ears.

Angelica is one of a small number of U.S. children who are testing what's called an auditory brainstem implant, or ABI. The device goes beyond cochlear implants that have brought hearing to many Deaf children but that don't work for tots who lack their hearing nerve.

When the ABI is first turned on, "she isn't going to be hearing like a 3-year-old. She'll be hearing like a newborn," audiologist Laurie Eisenberg of the University of Southern California tells parents. She outlined the research Friday at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The children don't magically understand and use those sounds. "It's going to take a lot of work," Eisenberg cautioned.

Angelica cried when her ABI first was switched on, scared by the sounds. But five months later, her mother says the youngster uses sign language to identify some sounds that was a cough, that's a dog barking. And she's beginning to babble like hearing babies do, as therapists work to teach her oral speech.

"It's just so awesome to hear her little voice," said Julie Lopez of Big Spring, Texas, who enrolled her daughter in the study at USC, where researchers say she's progressing well.

Many children born Deaf benefit from cochlear implants, electrodes that send impulses to the auditory nerve, where they're relayed to the brain and recognized as sound. But the small fraction born without a working hearing nerve can't make that brain connection.

The ABI attempts to fill that gap by delivering electrical stimulation directly to the neurons on the brainstem the nerve normally would have targeted. Here's how it works: The person wears a microphone on the ear to detect sound, and a processer changes it to electrical signals. Those are beamed to a stimulator under the skin, which sends the signals snaking through a wire to electrodes surgically placed on the brainstem... Deaf Manitoba curler, Clifford Beaulieu, 42, sent to hospital after being discovered outside by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

CBC WINNIPEG - The family of a Manitoba man who died after spending the night outdoors is devastated and still has questions about what led him into the cold.

Clifford Beaulieu, 42, was spending time with some friends at a home in the Rural Municipality of St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba. Feb. 4. He left and never returned.

"I know he froze from the elements and that, but why let him leave the house like that, and not, you know, check on him, see where he went?" said Martin Beaulieu, Clifford's brother.

Beaulieu was sent to hospital after being found outdoors by police the next day. He died in hospital.

Martin said the group had been drinking and that Clifford left the house after an argument broke out.

"They told me that he was intoxicated when he left the house, but he was also angry at them and when he left, he just, like, he walked away angry," said Martin. "Still, no matter what, you don't let a person walk out in the cold like that."

Beaulieu was part of a Canada’s National Deaf Curling team. The team will compete in the 2015 Winter Deaflympics in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia - March 28 to April 5, 2015.

Joshua Beckman: No More Deaf Schools ?

VIDEO: [ASL/CC] - Do you care about Deaf Schools?

The video producer by Joshua Beckman also known as vlogger posted on YouTube social networking for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. This vlog in ASL storytelling of the Deaf Schools and education the community.

You care about Deaf schools right? Well I too, care about the Deaf schools.

Did you know that many of those schools endure hardship? What struggles are there, you might ask? Lack of moral support from the government, community, staff, administration, teachers, parents. Support is naught and hard to find. There are funding constraints as well.

Now you are watching me in disbelief. Worrying, disappointed; feeling angry, frustrated, heart-wrenched. Me too, I am in the exact same boat as you are.

Turn "Closed Captioned" On.

What can the Deaf community do to help? There is a solution… but it is not an imminent fix. They are as following:

1) All Deaf schools must have at least 75% Deaf people working there. What I meant by 75% is, for instance: chefs, landscape maintenance workers, custodians, teachers, education assistants, staff, support staff, administration et cetera. All positions available must be at least 75% employed by Deaf people.

With that being said, the system itself must change first. How? We, the Deaf people take initiative with the due process.

2) The names of the Deaf schools themselves must change.

It all boils down to the word ‘for’ inside the name of the school. It bears a negative connotation. Essentially it means a population for you [hearing people] to serve, and to provide support. The word ‘for’ is archaic. Why don't we use Deaf schools instead? More positive. That term is a direct reflection of the Deaf community

3) Deaf E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N, we must take back what belongs to us.

We decide. We control. We govern and modify policies accordingly. Not them, hearing people. The government workers must no longer be in such position with power. Again, we decide. Doing so, we all must collaborate together, collectively.

The people who worked on this VLOG.

Deaf Teenage Girl Now Hears With Her Brain

VIDEO [CC] - Thanks to special technology, 14-year-old Maggie Gleason can now hear. But the really remarkable thing is that she's hearing with her brain, not her ears.

CLEVELAND - Maggie Gleason, 14, who was born Deaf, heard sound for the first time in her life when hearing specialists at University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center turned on an innovative electronic device called an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). The implantable device provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly Deaf.

Maggie was born without cochleas, the small snail-shaped bones in her inner ears which house the auditory (hearing) nerve. As a result of her condition, she had no auditory nerve. Maggie had to wait for a technology like ABI to advance to a stage where it could help her. ABI bypasses the ear and stimulates the brain stem.

According to one of her surgeons, Maroun Semaan, MD, of UH Case Medical Center, Maggie may be the first teen with this device for absent cochleas.

Turn "Closed Captioned" On.

"For someone who has never heard, the perception and awareness of sound is extremely helpful," said Dr. Semaan, Director, Otology, Neurotology, and Balance Disorders at UH Case Medical Center and Associate Professor, Otolaryngology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

ABI is a prosthetic hearing device that stimulates neurons directly at the human brainstem, bypassing the inner ear and hearing nerve entirely, which in Maggie's case, did not even exist. The device consists of a tiny radio receiver implanted underneath the skin and tiny platinum electrodes implanted into the brain stem. ... Miracle on 34th Street Deaf Girl & Santa Scene

VIDEO: High-Definition quality video of a little Deaf girl (Sami) and Santa (Richard Attenborough) signing in ASL "Miracle On 34th Street" scene.

Miracle On 34th Street (1994) - In the scene, a young Deaf girl is brought to sit on the lap of Kriss Kringle at the fictional Cole's department store. Kringle (Richard Attenborough), who hasn't been told of the child's disability, asks her what she would like for Christmas.

After her mother informs him that her child is Deaf and that all she wanted was to sit on Santa's lap, Kringle summons his seasonal powers and begins a sign-language (ASL) conversation.

The stoic girl is transformed on camera with a delighted, surprised smile, signing back her answers, much to the tearful surprise of her mother and more than a few audience members.

As it happens, there is something even more touching about the scene: It is acted by 5-year-old Sami Krieger, the second of three Deaf children born to Jay and Linda Krieger, both of whom are also Deaf.

In the living room of their modest duplex in Hanover Park, a middle-class suburb of Chicago, Sami fidgets in her father's lap, grappling with a temporary case of acute shyness, while her sisters Amanda, 6, and Wanda, 1, look on.

Jay Krieger, with the help of a sign-language interpreter, says of making the film, "The experience was wonderful, really great. The (John) Hughes (production) people treated Sami like royalty, giving her a trailer with a star that had her name on it, which made her feel special," he says.

"My wife had mixed feelings about it, and so did I at first, but if she decides to do something like this again, I think that would be fine with us."

Sami, all warmed up for her interview, signs: "It was really fun being in the movie. Being with Santa and seeing all those toys was the best part," though it was "hard," she says, to pretend it was Christmas in the middle of a sweltering Chicago summer.

"I wish I could have pretended it was Easter, because that's my favorite holiday," she says.

In the original, it is a Dutch war orphan who pays a magical visit to Santa, who instinctively knows her native language and sings to her in Dutch. Hughes rewrote the script, substituting a hearing-impaired child.

"When I read the scene with the Deaf girl," says Mayfield in a phone interview, "that represented the reason why this movie could be remade in relation to a more modern view of the world. And I think this had to be an honest moment iit would only work with a real Deaf girl, who probably never sat on Santa's lap... Read More: Sami and Santa, 'Miracle's' Mutual Admiration Society-LATimes
