Deaf Holocaust Survivors - Remembrance Day

VIDEO [CC] - German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz in Oswiecim, Poland. January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Deaf survivors of the Holocaust gathered around the globe on Tuesday on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau to remember the mothers, fathers, siblings and others lost to genocide - the pain of memory of the squalid ghettos, the inhuman Nazi death camps, of starvation and terror.

This documentary covers the treatment of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in Nazi Germany during World War Two. 17,000 Deaf people were forcibly sterilised by the Nazis to stop them from having children and many others were killed simply because they were Deaf - in a bid to improve the German gene pool.

As part of the season of programmes commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust and the liberation of Auschwitz, Clive Mason visits the killing centre of Hadamar to investigate the development and impact of the Nazi policy of enforced sterilisation and the murder of Deaf and Disabled people, which took place in Germany between 1933 and 1945. Members of the German Deaf community, who are still living with the legacy of this brutal Nazi policy, tell their moving stories for the first time on television.

#WhoWillAnswer The Calls?

The National Domestic Violence Hotline partners with Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services to provide a Hotline staffed by Deaf Advocates who communicate in American Sign Language and answer calls from 9am-5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

But what about calls that occur after 5pm and on weekends when the Deaf advocates are not available to receive calls due to lack of funding?

Instead, calls are routed to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, where hearing advocates answer using interpreters after hours. We need fully trained Deaf advocates that can answer using American Sign Language any time they are needed. Who do we want to answer the call? Help us expand our program so Deaf Advocates are able to answer the call, 24/7.

Winnipeg Most Racist City In Canada: Maclean's

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [CC] - Welcome/Bienvenue to Winnipeg, where Canada's racism problem is at its worst.

Maclean's magazine has labelled Winnipeg the most racist city in Canada.

How the death of Tina Fontaine has finally forced it to face its festering race problem, by associate editor Nancy Macdonald published the magazine, "Welcome to Winnipeg, Canada: Where Canada's racism problem is at its worst" into public and the Canadians and Winnipeggers find out quite shocked that Winnipeg is Canada's most racist city.

Turn "Closed Captioned" On.

The Aboriginal community of Deaf and Hard of Hearing does feel the same manner as aboriginal people as well. There appears "Deaf" on the article which Tina Fountine's former boyfriend, who is Deaf, quote: "Her boyfriend was Deaf; the pair communicated by texting." Maclean's.

Winnipeg's racism problem is at its worst:

Nancy Macdonald

“Oh Goddd how long are aboriginal people going to use what happened as a crutch to suck more money out of Canadians?” Winnipeg teacher Brad Badiuk wrote on Facebook last month. “They have contributed NOTHING to the development of Canada. Just standing with their hand out. Get to work, tear the treaties and shut the FK up already. Why am I on the hook for their cultural support?”

Another day in Winnipeg, another hateful screed against the city’s growing indigenous population. This one from a teacher (now on paid administrative leave) at Kelvin High School, long considered among the city’s progressive schools - alma mater to just about every Winipegger of note, from Marshall McLuhan to Izzy Asper, Fred Penner and Neil Young.

Badiuk’s comments came to light the day Rinelle Harper - the shy 16-year-old indigenous girl left for dead in the city’s Assiniboine River after a brutal sexual assault - spoke publicly for the first time after her recovery. She called for an inquiry to help explain why so many indigenous girls and women are being murdered in Winnipeg, and elsewhere in Canada.

Badiuk’s comments came while the city was still reeling from the murder of Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old child from the Sagkeeng First Nation who was wrapped in plastic and tossed into the Red River after being sexually exploited in the city’s core.

They came after Nunavummiuq musician Tanya Tagaq, last year’s Polaris Music Prize winner, who complained that while out to lunch in downtown Winnipeg where she was performing with the city’s ballet this fall, “a man started following me calling me a ‘sexy little Indian’ and asking to f–k.”

They came the very week an inquest issued its findings in the death of Brian Sinclair, an indigenous 45-year-old who died from an entirely treatable infection after being ignored for 34 hours in a city ER.

They came in the wake of a civic election dominated by race relations after a racist rant by a frontrunner’s wife went viral: “I’m really tired of getting harassed by the drunken native guys” downtown, Gord Steeves’s wife, Lori, wrote on Facebook. “We all donate enough money to keep their sorry asses on welfare, so shut the f–k up and don’t ask me for another handout!” The former city councillor and long-serving, centrist politician didn’t bother apologizing. He lost, but not because of this.

For decades, the friendly Prairie city has been known for its smiling, lefty premiers, pacifist, Mennonite writers and a love affair with the Jets. Licence plates here bear the tag “Friendly Manitoba.” But events of last fall served to expose a darker reality. The Manitoba capital is deeply divided along ethnic lines. It manifestly does not provide equal opportunity for Aboriginals. And it is quickly becoming known for the subhuman treatment of its First Nations citizens, who suffer daily indignities and appalling violence. Winnipeg is arguably becoming Canada’s most racist city... Read More: http://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/welcome-to-winnipeg-where-canadas-racism-problem-is-at-its-worst/

There is the shadow of racism will rightly continue to hang over the community of Winnipeg.

5 Stars Hotel With 30% of Deaf Employees

VIDEO: Hotel sets trend by employing highest number of Deaf people in Cape Town, South Africa.

A new Cape Town hotel has been making headlines for all the right reasons lately by exposing guests to the world and life of Deaf people.

The Newlands based Park Inn hotel has a staff compliment where 30% of the employees are completely or partially Deaf. It's believed the hotel has the highest compliment of Deaf employees in the world.

From the outside it paints the picture of a modest hotel, but guests are pleasantly surprised when they are welcomed in sign language. Employees in many of the departments are Deaf but are not hampered by their disability when dealing with clients.

"Communication with guests is very important for some of us. It's very difficult without hearing aid so we try to do written communication, but for me I have hearing aid and I also train myself to try and speak clearly so to greet them and when guests see my I am Deaf badge, guests are very accommodating and their attitudes gradually change.

Guests at the hotel have praised their work. "My experience is absolutely wonderful and this hotel is a role model of employment equity. They are very good at lip reading," says hotel guest, Cheryl Harper.

Deaf SA has urged the importance of having Deaf community gain access to the working environment. "As you know the South Africa unemployment rate is so high especially in the Deaf community. Access to employment for Deaf people is so important,” says Bruno Druchen from Deaf SA.

The hotel opened its doors in December and has a full time sign language interpreter on site. Cape Town hotel sets trend by employing highest number of Deaf people. SOURCE

Target Canada Closing All Stores

VIDEO: Target Canada chopping 133 stores and 17000 jobs.

TORONTO - Almost two years to the day after announcing its intention to enter Canada, Target said it will close all its stores in the country after suffering over $2-billion in losses, the company has 133 Canadian locations and 17,600 employees in Canada.

U.S. discounter Target Corporation is closing its money-losing stores in Canada after almost two troubled years here.

The Minneapolis-based retailer said on Thursday it filed an application for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto.

“After a thorough review of our Canadian performance and careful consideration of the implications of all options, we were unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021,” said Brian Cornell, who became the new chief executive officer last summer.

“With the full support of Target Corporation’s board of directors, we have determined that it is in the best interest of our business and our shareholders to exit the Canadian market and focus on driving growth and building further momentum in our U.S. business,” he said in a statement.

With 133 stores in Canada and about 17,600 employees, Target expects to report about $5.4-billion (U.S) of pretax losses on discontinued operations in the fourth quarter of 2014, mainly as a result of the writedown of the company’s investment in Target Canada along with costs tied to leaving this country and operating losses in the quarter before Thursday’s court filing.

Target expects to report about $275-million of pretax losses on discontinued operations in fiscal 2015.

Target anticipates its cash costs to discontinue its Canadian operations to be $500-million to $600-million, most of which will occur in the retailer’s 2015 fiscal year or later. It said it has enough resources to fund these expected costs, including cash on hand and ongoing cash generation from its U.S. business. Interpretive Sign Languages Mashup 'F**k You'

VIDEO: 'Fuck You' by Cee Lo. - Interpretive Sign Languages Mashup - One Song, Many Interpretations!

A variety people giving their personal interpretive performances are sign language interpretations of the song "Fuck You" by Cee Lo.

This is "interpretive" so the hand signs don't match up between people but that also makes it interesting. Some are students and so might make a few mistakes but that doesn't really matter this video for purposes.

People who understand American Sign Language as to whether this video makes sense or if it is very confusing to follow... Put the videos together that they were all using different hand gestures. It'd find that confusing but then again there is something noteworthy about each signing the song in their own, personal, interpretive, fashion. Awesome isn't it?

Deaf and Hearing News - Deaf Family

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Short film: How does Deaf and Hearing Network impact a Deaf family? #NewsForEveryone.

DHN is a place where everyone can get the news in the language that suits them best, whether they are Deaf or Hearing. This is the first of five installments to show you that DHN is the #NewsForEveryone. How does DHN benefit you? Tell us in the comments below or on social media.

DHN is a news agency out of Phoenix, Arizona. We incorporate American Sign Language, spoken English and captions into each broadcast. There are 48 million Deaf or Hard of Hearing people in America and the majority of them are born into hearing families. Very few of those families will learn sign language - American Sign Language, ASL. This gives the entire family access to news.

Videographer: David Banen

Editor: Peyton Gallovich

Music: Jeff Southwick - http://www.singlemanstudios.com/

Actors: Abrams-Gay Family

This is the first news show to involve all three forms of communication and give information relevant to everyone whether they are involved in the Deaf community or not. What most people fail to realize is that English and ASL are two completely different languages with their own grammatical structures. Plus, English is a second language for most deaf people and the lag and inaccuracy in live captioning can make daily news a daunting task.

DHN hopes to grow into a national, daily broadcast with news segments and other network programs. We currently air on local channels and online.

TheHolism: Extremist Big 'D' Deaf People

VIDEO [ASL] - TheHolism claims "closure" due to the extremist big "D" Deaf people.

The video producer by theHolism also known as Barry Sewell posted on YouTube social networking for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community.

This video offers a final conclusive look at the situation after being driven out of a American Sign Language based web site of the DeafVideo.TV that Barry was part of for a very long time. The mob mentality that happened there was a product of extremist big "D" Deaf people. They expected him and several others to conform to their views on things or be driven out.

On 1/1/2015, Barry was driven out for having perspectives that did not suit them. He is community of interest also made them feel uncomfortable because of the depth and nature of our topics. Because they could not seem to understand some of the discussions we had, they accused us of belittling them. It amounted to "dumbing down of a society".

Critical and independent thinkers were not welcome there. Because of that Barry didn't belong there. Regardless of the difference, the owner of DeafVideo.TV and Barry met and reached a peaceful closure with hope that it'll finally give everybody the closure they seek.

Bottom the line, Barry claimed "closure" which means he is apparently "banned" according to the owner responses has reacted to a video showing DeafVideo.TV's comments. Try harder than that next time, Barry.
