If your child has been diagnosed with severe hearing loss, we are sorry. Your baby is Deaf, so you will need to communciate with baby in a visual way, through sign language, simply as that. Baby's deafness will not limit their ability to do whatever the baby wants in life.



Edit: The video describes American Sign Language as a visual language, but that is not to say that ALL people who use ASL access it visually.

Causes of Deafness:

There are many reasons why a child can be born Deaf or become Deaf early in life. It is not always possible to identify the reason. This section lists many of the common reasons. There is information on possible causes that happen before a child is born and those that happen at birth or afterwards.



Causes before birth (pre-natal causes) - Many children are born Deaf because of a genetic reason. Deafness can be passed down in families even though there appears to be no family history of deafness. Sometimes the gene involved may cause additional disabilities or health problems.



Deafness can also be caused by complications during pregnancy. Illnesses such as rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), toxoplasmosis and herpes can cause a child to be born Deaf. The Pennsylvania woman has had hearing problems since childhood, and went completely deaf around five years ago. This is the tender moment a granny heard her baby granddaughter laugh for the very first time after doctors turned on her cochlear implant. Sarah Campbell, 57, had suffered hearing problems since childhood and went completely deaf around five years ago.



But, as the “Today” show cameras rolled on Tuesday morning, the nation watched as she heard the her tiny 1-year-old relative giggle with excitement. "I'm hearing her! Woo! Baby! She was laughing, I think," she told audiologist Michelle Montes as host Matt Lauer stood by.



The Norristown, Pennsylvania, native struggled to work and interact with people and constantly needed new and updated hearing aids.

NEDERLANDS - The language development of children with a cochlear implant who only learn spoken language is faster than that of children with a cochlear implant who are also learning sign language. This is what Leiden researcher Karin Wiefferink concludes in her dissertation.



Monolingual environment may be better for development of spoken language: Wiefferink compared the language development of Flemish children with a cochlear implant (CI) with that of Dutch children who also had a cochlear implant, but who grew up in a bilingual environment in which they were learning both spoken language and sign language. The study shows that the spoken language development of the Flemish children was faster than that of the Dutch children. What was remarkable was that the sign language of the Dutch children barely showed any signs of development once they had a cochlear implant. In addition, after a while, the Dutch children developed a preference for spoken language. These results suggest that a monolingual environment is better for language development than a bilingual environment.



Socio-emotional development: A second study from the dissertation shows that the socio-emotional development of children with a CI is slower than that of hearing children. A notable finding was that the linguistic development only played a minor role in this context. One possible explanation is that CI children are less aware of what is happening in their direct environment, because they find it difficult to follow conversations in a noisy environment. Deaf Woman Hears Son's Voice For First Time

A 26-year-old mother, who was born Deaf, was able to hear her son’s voice for the first time with a cochlear implant. Amy was sitting in her doctor’s office with her family as she tried out the implant, an electronic device surgically implanted in the ear.



She started crying instantly after hearing her six-year-old son Blake speak to her for the first time. “Hi mom,” Blake said, as the room erupted with laughter. Amy nodded to indicate she heard what he said. “I feel weird,” she said. “It feels so different.”



Though she was completely Deaf, she still received her high school diploma and college degree. She escaped from her silent life with the implant, something she had always dreamed of doing but never thought was possible.

“This is just a start to the road ahead to learn what sound is and where it comes from. It was the most amazing day ever to be a witness to this medical miracle and a true gift from God,” Amy’s aunt Catherine Arnold said.

Dailymail.co.uk - A Tulsa family is celebrating after the Deaf little girl they adopted from China was able to hear for the first time - a moment they described as 'breathtaking'. Gifted a cochlear implant, Jayde Scholl now squeals and laughs with delight as she listens to the sound of her adoptive mother Jaque Scholl's voice.



On Tuesday the implant was switched on, marking the end of a two adoption process for Jayde after she spent the first four-years of her life in a Chinese orphanage after being abandoned in a town square at the age of eight-months.

Luckily for Jayde, the Scholl's were looking to adopt and saw her on trip to China two-years-ago, but international adoptions take longer than domestic ones.



Once the paper-work was complete, the Scholl's brought Jayde to the United States just before Christmas.



However, Jaque, who is a doctor of audiology at her own School Center for the Deaf in Oklahoma, noticed something was wrong with her new daughter on the plane home.
