Deaf Lifestyle - Oralism Versus Manualism

Deaf News: Isolating Deaf youngsters from the Deaf community might not be in their best interests in the United Kingdom.

Article by Sarah Lawrence from Slfirst magazine - States of the art hearing aids and cochlear implants might not translate to mainstream achievements.

Born into a hearing family and brought up in mainstream education, neither my parents or the teachers for the deaf, had any knowledge of the local Deaf community. In fact, in the same way that my ‘teacher for the deaf’ discouraged me from learning sign language, in many respects I was also advised not to have anything to do with the Deaf community.

Being strong willed and recognising that I was different to other children in the school (lots of them made sure I knew that), I went on to make my own mind up about what was best for me, my decisions differing markedly from what the ‘teacher of the deaf’ and social worker for the deaf, had suggested was in my best interest. Right or wrong, they were my decisions, and my life has been enriched by being involved in a wide range of Deaf community groups and activities ever since.

Because of my links to and involvement in the Deaf community, I have developed my own identity in life, I have friends who understand the issues I face every day, who support me, and I have people who share the passion I have for reaching a stage when society concentrates on what we can do, rather than the simple fact we cannot hear and might not be able to talk.

Being a part of the Deaf community, I learned all about Deaf sport and Deaf activities, and getting involved has meant that I have travelled all over the United Kingdom and internationally to take part in sport. Through these travels I have learned about Deaf life in other countries and had the chance to meet people who greet me as a long lost friend when we meet up again.

It’s not all chocolates and roses of course, as people face a wide range of issues and Deaf Club or a Deaf social event is a good place to seek help and advice about how to tackle that. Overwhelmingly though, having a Deaf identity and being a part of a Deaf community has been a huge positive in my life, adding great value, and helping me make sense of many of the problems and barriers I experience in my life. I knew and still know today, that those problems and barriers are not personal attacks on me... Keeping Deaf Children Safe From Sexual Abuse

VIDEO [CC] - NSPCC: This is a version of our Underwear Rule guide to help protect Deaf children from abuse.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) have launched a new video version of its successful Underwear Rule guidance today to help keep Deaf children safe from sexual abuse.

The film is in British Sign Language and includes subtitles. It aims to teach Deaf children about the Underwear Rule and encourages them to share secrets that upset them with a trusted adult.

The successful campaign is designed to allow parents to start easy conversations with their children without having to mention scary words like sex or abuse. It teaches them that their privates are private and that their body belongs to them. See BSL video: https://youtu.be/lvD74L86Mr8

Bed Bug - Education and Awareness

VIDEO [CC] - Public education and awareness: Why bed bugs are making a comeback in the United States and United Kingdom.

These tiny parasites, better known as bedbugs, have spread through Los Angeles, New York and London over the past 60 years, Americans and Britishers thought they had vanquished bed bugs forever. They were wrong.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Bed bugs have been an insanity-inducing staple of American life ever since the Mayflower. In 1926, infestations in hotels and apartments were so common that experts couldn't recall a time when they weren't a problem. People absolutely hated being bitten in the night by these tenacious bloodsuckers, but the bugs were seemingly impossible to eradicate.

Then, in 1939, a Swiss chemist named Paul Hermann Muller discovered the pesticide DDT, which proved staggeringly effective at killing insects. And, for decades thereafter, DDT and other chemical pesticides helped keep America's homes and hotels bed bug free.

But it didn't last. Since 2000, a new strain of pesticide-resistant bed bugs has been popping up all around the nation in 2009, there were 10,000 reported complaints in New York City alone. Apartment dwellers were waking up with mysterious bites and rashes on their skin and finding peppery flakes around their mattresses (bed bug poop). People couldn’t rid themselves of bed bugs no matter how often they did laundry or threw out their mattresses. Once the bugs invaded, it seemed, almost nothing can stop them.

The bed bug invasion is a skin-crawling story recounted in Brooke Borel’s riveting new book, Infested: How the Bed Bug Infiltrated Our Bedroom and Took Over the World (the book was partially funded by the Alfred Sloan Foundation). I called Borel, a science journalist, to hear more about how bed bugs made a comeback, why they’re so tenacious, and whether we might ever get rid of them again.

Brad Plumer: I’d half assumed bed bugs were a very recent phenomenon, so it was fascinating to see that even the ancient Egyptians were trying to cast spells to ward them off.

Brooke Borel: Yeah, one thing that really struck me was the similarities throughout history. When the bed bug resurgence happened in the last 15 years, we had all these newspaper articles saying, oh my god, they’re in the movie theaters, there in this place, in that place. But when I went back and read some of the historical material, that’s always been the case.

You can go back and read descriptions of these old beds with jars around the legs that contained paraffin to ward off bed bugs. And that’s just an old school version of these little traps you can buy today to put under your bed and capture the bugs. It’s just an old story that’s been repeating itself forever.

BP: Now, there was this 60-year period after World War II where we’d vanquished bed bugs. How did that happen?

BB: A big part of that story happened in 1939, when a Swiss chemist [Paul Hermann Muller] discovered the insecticidal properties of DDT. These were the first synthetic insecticides, and they were way more effective than the natural botanicals or elemental poisons we had been using previously... Deaf Couple Had Their Baby Officially Registered With A Sign Name

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf baby becomes first person in Britain to have her sign language name that means smiley face legally recorded on her birth certificate.

LONDON - A Deaf couple have become the first people in Britain to record their baby's name in sign language on her birth certificate.

Theatre director Paula Garfield, 47, and her partner Tomato Lichy, 39, from Wembley, north London, wanted to record Hazel's name in British Sign Language (BSL), but said they were initially told by their local Brent Register Office that it was impossible.

Now their personal name for four-year-old Hazel, a reference to her smiling face, has pride of place on her birth certificate - as UbOtDDstarL.

Hazel's sign name, like many others, is not simply the letters H-A-Z-E-L spelt out.

Instead it is a made-up combination of symbols which, when taken in context, describes her personality in a way only her parents and friends can fully understand.

Hazel's sign name is written as UbOtDDstarL, which represents a combination of hand movements.

The U represents the chin, bO means a 'baby O' made with the thumb and forefinger, tD means 'hands facing the signer', Dstar means 'the handshape opens' and L shows the shape of the hand.

Put that together and it makes a small O shape held at the chin, which then opens into an L shape.

Ms Garfield told MailOnline she had a battle of up to nine months with the Register Office. The issue was finally sorted around four years ago, but the case has had little publicity.

'My daughter's sign name is what it is because her first expression was a smile,' she said. 'There's no way to translate it perfectly into English.

'But we went to the register office and they said it was "ridiculous, you can't register a sign name, don't be silly". So we got in touch with a solicitor, who said the law allows people to have their name on a birth certificate "in their own language".' ... Deaf-Blind Man Pushed Onto Rail Tracks

RAW VIDEO: A pair of thugs who pushed a blind and Deaf man and his brother on to train tracks in a 'horrifying assault' at a busy station have both been jailed.

Daniel Webster, 23, and Niall Martin, 24 pushed a 31-year-old, off the platform at Chelmsford station in Essex, then threw his brother Joseph down after him as he tried to intervene.

Martin admitted ABH on the brother and was given a nine-month sentence but he has been freed already after he spent five months in custody, making him eligible for parole. Webster was jailed for 22 months after pleading guilty to GBH and ABH against both brothers.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard that the victim was attacked by Webster and Martin late at night on February 20 this year after the pair came over to ask him about train times.

A row broke out, and Webster launched his attack on the victim, who was described in court as 'profoundly Deaf' and is registered blind.

CCTV footage from the station shows a second man trying to come to the aid of his vulnerable brother, only for both of them to be thrown on to the tracks. As the pair scramble back to the platform edge and attempt to climb back to safety, Martin and Webster punch them both in the head, leaving them stranded. Network rail staff were forced to put a block on all trains coming through the station over fears that the pair could have been killed.

Jailing the pair yesterday Judge David Turner QC said it had been a 'disgraceful episode' and labelled their actions 'manifestly dangerous'. He said: 'This is exactly the sort of thing that terrifies members of the travelling public late at night.'

Speaking afterwards, Detective Constable Alan Reed of British Transport Police said: 'This is one of the most appalling incidents I have investigated. 'Webster and Martin showed a savage disregard for their victims, and one of the brothers is still suffering from the injuries sustained to his foot.

'It is no exaggeration to say the brothers could have been killed after being thrown onto the tracks. 'I would like to pay tribute to the victims, who have shown great dignity following what was a terrifying ordeal for them 'I hope the sentence will provide them with some sense of closure, although in truth, the impact this has had on both of them is likely to remain with them for the rest of their lives.'

The court heard that the victim spent six weeks on crutches and was off work for six months. He now walks with a limp and has been told the foot injury may take two years to heal and may need further surgery. Source

Ted Evans - In Search Of The DEAF WORLD

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf World Promo - "In Search of the Deaf World" by Ted Evans.

Deaf filmmaking, Ted Evans - a british freelance director, editor and general all round filmmaker based in London, U.K.

Ted Evans having recently visited Malaysia where he met numerous Deaf people from all kinds of backgrounds; He have since fantasied about travelling all over the world, meeting a wide range of unique Deaf people who have a story to tell. During this search the process would also reveal the sub-story of the filmmaker's' journey, as they search for the Deaf people and where they live.

Deaf people are not recorded and they are hidden from view. Deaf History was recorded by a very limited few yet there are so many fascinating stories and characters to unearth.

Having such films would both educate mainstream society on several authentic aspects of Deaf Culture and at the same time serve to inspire Deaf people who do not know how other Deaf people like them, live in countries across the world.

Using the footage his shot in Malaysia, He have put together a promo teaser to give the viewer a sense of style and the type of visuals they'd be keen to incorporate into the films. This is not a real programme or docmentary series.

Filmed by Ted Evans (5DMK2 footage shot mainly by Becky Bailey and a few shots here and there from Brian Duffy)

Ted Evans' statement on the website - "This is simply something we could do if we had the funding and networks set up. I hope people see this and want to see more because it proves that there would be an audience for such films.

I don't know when I can finish this pilot. Firstly I have no budget, secondly there will be some major translation challenges to overcome and this takes time and money something I am very short on. If you wish to help you can donate some money via the Tip-Jar below this film.

A big thanks must go out to my friends at silentSHOUT who helped set up a lot of what you see in this clip. They pretty much produced this episode and I appreciate all the time and work they put into our visit.

I didn't want the footage to sit on a shelf somewhere so I quickly cut this. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could travel to countries all over the world, finding unique deaf people in all kinds of environments. We already know that some stories would be incredibly sad and difficult, but there will also be inspiring ones and stories that will fascinate everyone. Until then just imagine what we could do!" - Ted Evans

#fakeinterpreter - Education Rights For Deaf Children

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Education rights for Deaf children (feature of the #fakeinterpreter)

The #fakeinterpreter incident during Nelson Mandela's memorial teaches us an important thing - if you can't sign, don't pretend you can.

However, there is a large number of incompetent communication support workers "interpreting" for Deaf children in mainstream schools in the United Kingdom.

Deaf children are born with the same basic capacities for learning and language as all children; they can and should reach their full potential with appropriate, visual, quality educational programmes and support - it is their human rights!

Deaf Scottish Yachtsman Receives Hero's Welcome

VIDEO: Deaf sailor receives hero's welcome. The first Deaf person to have sailed single-handed around the world, passing all five capes, has returned home to a hero's welcome.

SOUTH AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND - Gerry Hughes, 55, fulfilled his boyhood dream of sailing past the capes, racking up 32,000 miles on an eight-month voyage.

Hundreds of members of the Deaf community turned out at Troon harbour in South Ayrshire to congratulate the father-of-two, who was born without hearing.

The teacher, from Glasgow, is one of around 300 people to have completed the feat, joining a list of successful solo-circumnavigators which includes Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Sir Frances Chichester.

After hugging his tearful wife Kay, 47, on his arrival, he swapped the champagne popped in his honour for a pint of his favourite Guinness.

He spoke of a great sense of achievement, having fulfilled an ambition he has had since he was 14.

Stormy weather often created tough sailing conditions, causing him to capsize at one stage. But he cited problems with electronic equipment, not his lack of hearing, as the biggest challenge of the trip.

Speaking through a sign language interpreter, he said: "Being Deaf, the only thing I didn't have was the VHF radio contact. I feel vibrations. That's how the boat communicates with me. I'd be asleep and I knew that winds were coming. Other people can hear those things but I was able to compensate in that way. ...READ MORE: http://www.expressandstar.com/news/uk-news/2013/05/08/deaf-sailor-receives-heros-welcome/, Visit http://www.gerrysmhughes.com for more information.

Deaf Patient Denied Interpreter By Scottish Hospital

Deaf patient left unable to communicate with hospital staff for 12 days after staff failed to provide sign language expert.

DUNDEE - A Deaf patient was left isolated and unable to communicate for 12 days in Ninewells Hospital because of a failure to provide her with access to a sign language interpreter, according to a report by Scotland’s public services watchdog.

The female patient who had been admitted to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital for surgery to have her appendix removed had a very limited lip reading ability and did not have a good understanding of written English.

And it was “impossible to say” with any certainty whether the deaf patient had given informed consent for the surgery,

Jim Martin, the Scottish public services ombudsman, has ruled that NHS Tayside failed to adhere to the board’s informed consent policy and found that the failure to obtain a sign language interpreter for the patient was “unacceptable”.

He states in his report that a complaint had been raised on behalf of the patient, known as Ms A, that the board failed to provide a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter during her 12-day stay at Ninewells where she had been admitted for surgery to remove her appendix.

Ms A was a BSL user with very limited lip-reading ability. She did not use verbal communication and did not have a good understanding of written English.

Mr Martin states: “Although hospital staff took steps to try to communicate with Ms A, at no point did they provide an interpreter. This was despite Ms A repeatedly pointing to a poster on the wall, which was for interpreter services, and handing staff a BSL interpreter’s card on two separate occasions.”

He continues: “In the course of my investigation I took independent advice from my equality and diversity adviser and a medical adviser. The equality adviser said that staff had not taken reasonable and appropriate steps to obtain a BSL interpreter for Ms A in line with their legal duty to do so under section 20 of the Equality Act 2010. She said that once they had been alerted to Ms A’s need for a BSL interpreter, a clear plan should have been drawn up to try to coordinate the availability of doctors and others communicating with Ms A and a BSL interpreter, sufficiently trained to be able to communicate complex medical issues.” ...READ MORE: http://www.scotsman.com/news/health/deaf-patient-denied-interpreter-by-dundee-hospital-1-2862772

Creating Music Accessible For Deaf Children

VIDEO [BSL/CC] - BBC News - Creating music accessible for Deaf children.

Lying on a sound box: Deaf children listen to music - The National Orchestra of Wales has staged a series of workshops and concerts for Deaf people, many of them children, to explore how it is possible to experience music without being able to hear it fully.

The National Orchestra of Wales has been staging unique workshops and concerts for Deaf people. Radio 4 reporter Andrew Bomford discovers children listening to music in a very physical way and speaks to those behind it. Here he blogs about his emotional day.

I'll admit that I am a bit weepy sometimes. I cried at the end of Les Miserables, so the moment that the Welsh National Orchestra string section got started, and Katherine Mount stood there, signing and singing to her profoundly deaf - but clearly enraptured - ten year old son Ethan, I wasn't surprised to feel myself choking up again. Watch Katherine Mount singing Ethan's Song on YouTube

It was towards the end of a long, joyful, but emotionally draining day with the orchestra and children from The Ysgol Maes Dyfan special school in Barry near Cardiff. Some of them are almost completely deaf and others have serious hearing problems, but the joy and enthusiasm shown by the children in their appreciation of the music they were experiencing was wonderful to see. ...
