Deaf Outraged Over Fake Sign Language Interpreter At Mandela Memorial

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [CC] - The international Deaf community is angry over what they say was a fake sign language interpreter used at Mandela's memorial.

JOHANNESBURG - 'Fake' Mandela memorial sign language interpreter incites anger. It was an event the whole world was watching, but some Deaf people couldn't understand a word spoken at Mandela’s memorial and took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Allegations have been made that the sign language interpreter used at the memorial may have been unqualified.

Braam Jordaan, a Deaf South African citizen and board member of the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section (WDFYS), told SBS he believes the interpreter is a fake.

"The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying," he told SBS via email.

Mr Jordaan says the interpreter, who was signing for a portion of the ceremony including Obama's speech, was simply making up his own signs.

"I was really upset and humiliated by the mystery interpreter who was supposed to be signing what Barack Obama, the president of United States of America was saying," he says. "He made up his own signs."

"What happened at the memorial service is truly disgraceful thing to see - it should not happen at all.

"What happened today will be forever aligned with Nelson Mandela & Deaf Community, thanks to this fake interpreter."

Mr Jordaan says there have been question marks over the same interpretor at previous ANC events.

The Oceania representative for the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI), Sheena Walters, also states that the signing used was not recognisable as any accepted form of international or South African sign language.

“It seems quite obvious that the interpreter isn’t using South African sign language,” she told SBS. ... Read more: http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2013/12/11/anger-over-hoax-mandela-memorial-sign-language-interpretor

Wrong Medications Kill Pregnant Deaf Persons

Wrong medications kill pregnant Deaf persons – GNAD Director.

KUMASI - The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has observed that the inability of doctors and nurses to understand and interpret sign language was leading to wrong prescriptions of medicines to Deaf persons.

The GNAD said the phenomenon was leading to many expectant mothers among Deaf persons losing their lives while others were disheartened and disappointed, given the unfair treatment meted out to Deaf persons visiting health centres across the country.

Mr James M. Sambian, Executive Director of the GNAD, made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Monday to explain the challenges death persons encounter when accessing healthcare.

He said lack of sign language interpreters was resulting in inappropriate diagnosis because of communication barrier among Deaf patients and the hearing medical officers and the nurses.

Mr Sambian explained that the situation had resulted in the incidence of incorrect prescriptions consequently leading to preventable deaths.

The Executive Director noted that due to lack of understanding and interpretation of sign language, a medical officer in one of the health centres in the Ashanti Region sometime ago, prescribed wrong medicine to a pregnant Deaf woman which consequently killed her.

To break the communication barrier and getting an intermediary, many Deaf persons in most cases had to bear the entire cost of engaging a private sign language interpreter in order to access quality health. ...Read more: http://vibeghana.com/2013/03/18/wrong-medications-kill-pregnant-deaf-persons-gnad-director

Deaf Man Strikes Wife’s Lover With Axe

Deaf man strikes wife’s lover with axe in Africa.

CHINHOYI - A 63-year-old Deaf man from the Mamina communal area in Mhondoro, Christmas Makomeke, has been sentenced to three years in prison for striking a fellow villager with an axe accusing him of having an affair with his wife.

Makomeke was sentenced on his own plea of guilty to attempted murder when he appeared before Chinhoyi regional magistrate Never Katiyo last week.

The court heard that the complainant Cylus Bhunu (58) sustained serious shoulder, chest and head injuries in the attack which occurred on December 5 last year.

However, Makomeke had his jail sentence wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and that he pays $500 fine before March 29.

In passing sentence, the court considered Makomeke’s advanced age as a mitigatory factor and that he was Deaf and had been extremely provoked by the complainant who was, according to overwhelming evidence adduced in court, having an affair with the former’s wife.

The court heard that on December 5 last year at around 6am, Makomeke met Bhunu just outside the latter’s cattle pen.

Makomeke, who was armed with a hoe and an axe, accused Bhunu of having an affair with his wife. ...Read more: http://www.newsday.co.zw/2013/03/18/deaf-man-63-strikes-wifes-lover-with-axe/

Prince Harry Learns Sign Language

VIDEO: Prince Harry learns sign language: Prince Harry gives a nod to his late mother's fundraising work during his own charity mission to Africa.

LESOTHO - Prince Harry has made a visit to an African community to take a lesson in sign language at a school for Deaf and Blind children. The Prince mentioned Diana, Princess of Wales, as he gave a speech at a gala dinner for his Sentebale charity.

Earlier in the day, he met youngsters at a school for Deaf children in Lesotho, where he learned sign language and took part in a kneeling dance.

The royal hopes to raise £2.5m to build the Mamohato Centre, which will provide psychological care and offer mentoring to children with HIV/Aids.

"It seems only right that it should be named after His Majesty (of Lesotho) and Prince Seeiso's mother, Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso," he said in his speech in Johannesburg. "She was so loved as the mother of the nation. I hope she would be proud of what we are trying to achieve in her name.

"I hope that my mother will be proud, too. Maybe, just maybe, they are together somewhere up there, with blueprints and sketches already mapped out. I can only hope we put the swings in the right place."

Harry told guests that the Mamohato programme was already "transforming the lives of children living with HIV". He said: "I have met some of the children who have attended the Mamohato Camps, and they have so much more confidence and knowledge of how to live healthy lives."

During his visit to the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf on the outskirts of Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, the Prince was seen writing on a blackboard and laughing with the children. He joined the country's Prince Seeiso for a cookery class, making a kind of doughnut known in the local Sesotho language as makoenya.

Sky News' special correspondent Alex Crawford, in the capital, said: "He interacts incredibly beautifully with young people, even those who are Deaf, when communication is obviously an issue.

"But he was learning and asking them through sign language experts what their favourite subjects were at school and they were all really straining to talk to him, obviously overwhelmed by him." ... Read more: http://news.sky.com/story/1057572/prince-harry-i-hope-diana-is-proud-of-me
