Baltimore Riots: Erupts Into Violence, Chaos

BALTIMORE - CNN Breaking News - #BaltimoreRiots, April 27, 2015 - A state of emergency has been declared and the National Guard activated after the US city of Baltimore, Maryland erupted in violence on Monday.



Maryland Governor, Lawrence Hogan declares state of emergency in Baltimore as protests grow violent. Hundreds of rioters looted shops and burned buildings following the funeral of a 25-year-old black man called Freddie Gray who died after he was injured in police custody.

At least 15 police officers were injured in direct confrontations with the gangs of black youths. Maryland Governor Lawrence Hogan announced the emergency measures including the imposition of a curfew beginning Tuesday night.



“I’ve not made this decision lightly. The National Guard represents a last resort in order to restore order. Look, people have the right to protest and express their frustration, but Baltimore city families deserve peace and safety in their communities.”



Gray’s death latest at the hands of police.



Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 when he fled from police in a high crime area. He was carrying a switchblade knife, and he was put inside a transport van to be taken to a police station.



At some point, Gray suffered a spinal injury that led to his death a week later. Two officers have been accused of failing to belt him into his seat securely and of not giving him timely medical attention.



Gray’s death has sparked days of street protests and raised tensions in Baltimore. His family however has condemned the violence.



The killing of several unarmed black men by white police officers in recent months and decisions by grand juries not to indict the officers have triggered large-scale protests across the United States.

Deaf Fighter Matt Hamill Saves Baby On Highway

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: A Deaf UFC fighter, Matt Hamill saves baby on highway, female driver passed out on the video goes viral.



UTICA, NY - We are receiving reports that shortly after noon today, Matt ‘the Hammer’ Hamill helped save two lives on an active highway in Utica.



Hamill, who withdrew this past weekend from his scheduled light heavyweight title eliminator bout against Thiago Silva at WSOF 19 in Phoenix, Arizona due to illlness, was driving in New York today when a car drove past him going the opposite direction it was supposed to.



The mixed martial artist who was born Deaf, knew something was wrong and immediately turned his truck around in pursuit of the vehicle. Hamill was able to catch up to the car and pin it down to a crawl before it was finally came to a stop.

‘Hammer’ could not pry the door open so he broke through the glass with his fists. Much to his surprise he found an infant in the back seat while a female driver occupied the front seat, unresponsive and unconscious.



Police arrived on scene to confirm the woman was under the influence of alcohol and drugs which led to her arrest. SOURCE

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: A Father was called 'deaf and dumb' before being shot by other father in the neighborhood of Florida.



JACKSONVILLE, FL - The victim in a neighborhood shooting, a Deaf man, said the shooter mocked his disability before firing the gun. The victim is recovering after his neighbor shot him Sunday evening, police said.



The man's wife said she was watching from her window when everything unfolded. She said her husband got shot and fell on the ground. Surveillance video recorded screams in the Hunter's Way Apartments Sunday evening.



"I mean, instantly everybody was in panic mode," said Richard Royal. Royal was one of of the neighbors who rushed in to help 50-year old Allen Zogleman after a bullet grazed his head. His cameras captured the moments leading up to the shooting. "I don't think no one expected he was going to pull a gun out," said Royal.

It started with some sort of incident between Zogelman's and the suspect's children arguing. When Zogleman tried to explain he's Deaf, he was shot. Neighbors say the bloody sight unfolded in front of dozens of children. One of those kids was Zogleman's 4-year-old daughter.



Zogleman and his wife are both Deaf.



Action News' Brittany Jones went to talk to them and exchanged notes. His wife said the suspect's son struck her daughter in the head with a pole, and Zogleman yelled to her through their apartment window and went downstairs to talk to the boy's dad. She said that then, the man got into her husband's face, yelling. She said the suspect said her husband was "deaf and dumb," then shot him and left.



The neighbor's surveillance video shows a white car speeding off right after the shooting happened, but no one has seen the suspect since.

TV Producer Arrested For Murder Of Deaf Sister

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [CC] - Talk-Show producer arrested in connection with death of Deaf, partially blind sister.



LOS ANGELES - Television producer Jill Blackstone was released from custody Wednesday after her arrest in connection to the death of her Deaf, partially blind sister, authorities said.



About 12:40 p.m. Saturday, the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to a home in the 12000 block of Landale Street in Studio City, said Los Angeles police Lt. Bob Toledo.



Blackstone’s sister Wendy Blackstone, 49, was found unconscious in an enclosed garage where carbon monoxide had filled the room, Toledo said. A dead animal also was found in the garage.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate Wendy Blackstone, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of her death has not been determined pending further investigation, including toxicology tests, according to the coroner’s office.



Jill Blackstone, 52, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to arrest records.



A suicide note recovered at the home was believed to have been penned by Jill Blackstone, not her late sister, according to the website TMZ, which first reported the arrest.



Blackstone was released from custody about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to jail records. Prosecutors have not filed charges against her, Toledo said.



The Los Angeles County district attorney's office did not respond to an after-hours request for comment. Jill Blackstone also did not immediately respond to several requests for comment.



She has produced numerous television shows, including the “Rosie O’Donnell Show” and the “Sally Jessy Raphael Show,” according to her personal website. She also produced a 1993 episode of “The Jerry Springer Show,” according to the Internet Movie Database. SOURCE

Deaf Man's Neighbourhood Learns Sign Language

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [CC] - Entire neighbourhood learns sign language so they can talk to Deaf man and it moves him to tears.



This video shows the heartwarming moment a Deaf man realised an entire neighbourhood has learned sign language just for him.



Muharrem is shown wandering through his neighbourhood with his sister Ozlem meeting strangers who surprise him with their communication skills.



In the footage, filmed in Instanbul, Turkey, the siblings set out for for what Muharrem thinks is just going to be a normal day. But when they come across a man in a local shop who unexpectedly greets him with sign language, he knows the day is going to be anything but ordinary.

In one scene Muharrem bumps into a woman who apologises to him in sign language, and when they get into a cab, the driver signs "hello" to them. They are then dropped off in a public square where a group of neighbours greet the pair in sign language. Eventually Muharrem is moved to tears at the number of people willing and able to communicate with him.



The video was filmed using secret cameras for an advert organised by Samsung to promote its video call centre for the hearing impaired. The firm teamed up with an ad agency and spent a month setting up cameras around his neighborhood. SOURCE

ISIS Using Sign Language To Recruit Deaf Terrorists

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO - ISIS militants are using sign language to show that even people with disabilities can wage jihad for the Islamic State, a report said.



NEW YORK POST - In their latest recruitment video, titled “From Who Excused To Those Not Excused,” a pair of Deaf and mute fighters brandishing machine guns issued threats and urged Westerners to join their campaign of terror, NBC News reports.



The extremists claim to be working as traffic police in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which has become an ISIS stronghold in recent months. They are wearing black jumpsuits and military equipment fitted with handcuffs and ammunition as they speak about their desire to “slaughter” their enemies and radicalize others who will do the same.



Using both Arabic and English subtitles, the video begins with the statement: “We, the deaf and mute, direct our message to the Islamic world.”



“To the Muslims in Europe, both Arab and non-Arab, the way is open before you for you to come to the land of the Kilafah,” one of the militants continues, using sign language.

“The Islamic State is expanding…and we say to America, Britain, Italy and France, who have frantically mobilized against the Muslims, and we say to the rulers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, who have allied with them…the Messenger said, ‘We have only come to you with slaughter,’ and we will surely come and slaughter you, by Allah’s permission.”



Alex Kassirer, a researcher at the global security firm Flashpoint Intelligence, says the video “represents an attempt by the group to recruit other physically or otherwise impaired individuals, as well as demonstrates the multifaceted responsibilities of those in its ranks,” according to NBC News. He added that it now proves “even traffic police in the Islamic State have a dual functionality, also serving in military roles.” ... Men claim to be Deaf brothers working as traffic police in Mosul, Iraq. They show off their job while urging European Muslims to go and fight and the fighters pledge to 'slaughter' Britain, America and their Arabian allies, at the end of the film they are shown firing missiles at Kurdish troops.



The Deaf militants has released a new propaganda video showing two Deaf fighters speaking in sign language and urging more Westerners to join the terror group.



The video is titled 'From Who Excused To Those Not Excused' - suggesting that disability is no excuse for not serving for ISIS.



In the five minute clip the two men, who are Deaf and brothers, are shown working as traffic police in Iraq's second city Mosul, which has been under ISIS control since last summer.

Speaking in sign language with English and Arabic subtitles, one of the men says: 'I am a deaf mute who works in the traffic police in the Islamic State with my brother Abu Abdur-Rahman.



'As for my message to the apostate peshmerga (Kurdish fighters) we will strike you soon, by Allah's permission. I am living in a land in which Allah's sharia is established.'



Wearing black jumpsuits, ammunition pouches and carrying what appear to be M16 assault rifles, the pair also speak about their desire to 'slaughter' their enemies including Britain, America, France and Italy, saying 'you will not stop our advance'... MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile police have arrested Myles Xavier Smith for the shooting death of a 55-year-old woman named Dawn Lee.



The crime happened outside her home in the Onderdonk housing community off Shelton Beach Road. News 5 spoke with a woman who called police minutes after the shooting happened.



Carrie Hudson says it was around 3 o'clock Wednesday morning when a neighbor woke her up. "He said Dawn been shot. He says I heard a gun shot and when I came to the door she was laying in the street," Hudson said.



Although Lee's front door is taped with a warning sign that reads "Beware of Gun," Hudson says she doesn't know why Lee was targeted. "She's a nice lady. I don't even know why she was out at three in the morning," she said.

Hudson says Lee's apartment door was locked and her car was parked in its usual spot. She also says many of the residents in the housing community are hearing impaired. "We all look out for each other. Anybody that dies here dies from natural causes never anyone getting shot. This the first we heard of," she said.



Mobile police say Smith is also responsible for a shooting at ITT Tech earlier this year. Smith allegedly got into an argument with another student and shot him in the arm. That case was bound over to the Grand Jury and Smith was actually out on bond when today's shooting happened. He's now charged with murder and possession of a controlled substance. ... Some people ask me, do I wish that I had normal hearing like everyone else, and honestly looking back at my life now, I would say no.



Being Deaf and Hearing Impaired has made me who I am. The struggle, pain, tears, happiness and joy has put me in the position where I am today.



Don't let adversity define who you are. Let how you respond to diversity be who you are. Find a way. No excuses. It will be worth it. It was for me."

Deaf Restaurant ‘Signs’ Opening In Toronto

VIDEO [CC] New restaurant staffed largely by Deaf people opens at Yonge and Wellesley on July 16th, 2014.



TORONTO, ON - Imagine ordering your next meal out without even saying a word. That's the concept behind a new Toronto restaurant, ‘Signs’ where almost every server is Deaf or Hard of Hearing and customers are encouraged to order in sign language, the Toronto Star reports.



The restaurant is the brainchild of Anjan Manikumar. A former manager at a Markham, Ont. Boston Pizza, Manikumar noticed one of his regular guests, who was Deaf, couldn't communicate with staff. Manikumar then chose to learn American Sign Language, or ASL.

His education led to the development of Signs. Described as a restaurant where "noise meets silence," Signs will provide diners with "cheat sheets" to order their meals, BlogTO writes.



What's most novel about the restaurant, though, is that it will employ those who have faced obstacles in attaining steady work in Canada: A 1998 survey found 37 per cent of Deaf Canadians were unemployed.



According to Toronto Life, Signs will serve a blend of Canadian and international foods with a focus on game meat, so get your signs for rabbit and bison down pat before you visit. It is not yet known when the restaurant will officially open, a note on their Facebook page posted on June 15 simply stated that the grand opening would be delayed. Source

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO - Deaf man arrested after running over a woman at comic-con in San Diego.



SAN DIEGO, CA - Raw video of the vehicle running over a 64-year woman has emerged, showing the extent of injuries, including exposed flesh, muscle tissue and bone.



While there were initial claims that the motorist heard threats in other online footage, the driver of the vehicle is allegedly Deaf. The man claims he waited for the mass of people to pass, but they attacked his car, breaking his windshield and frightening his young children, he claims.



The Deaf man put his foot down and drove off to escape, but hit a nearby woman who was not participating in the walk. While police were at the head of the parade, no other police were present at any intersections.

The San Diego Zombie Walk was a non-sanctioned event of Comic Con 2014. The organizers of the Zombie Walk required all participants to obey traffic laws, including obeying traffic signals and laws around blocking vehicles which may have right of way.



The woman was seriously injured, and taken to a local hospital. Police have subsequently reported that the Deaf driver is not likely to face any charges. Source

Dog Saves Deaf Boy From Fire

VIDEO - A 2-year-old pit bull named Ace is being called a hero after waking his Deaf owner, a 13-year-old boy, during a devastating house fire. The teen's cochlear implants were turned off, so the dog licked his face to wake him up.



INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A 2-year-old male pit bull named Ace was being hailed as a hero Wednesday, after waking his Deaf teenage owner during a devastating house fire.



At 1:11 p.m., Indianapolis firefighters were called to fight a fire at a home on the city's south side, officials said. Upon their arrival, flames were shooting from the garage.



Officials said Nick Lamb, 13, who is Deaf, was sleeping in the house at the time. Ace was able to alert Nick and awaken him by licking his face. "He was thankful that Ace entered his room and licked his face until he woke up," Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith said in a news release. "The boy quickly covered his nose and mouth with his T-shirt and exited the rear of the house."

Lamb said he was taught at school about covering his face and finding the nearest exit. Without his shoes but with Ace by his side, he darted out of the back door before calling his mother and 911. "I couldn't hear anything because I had my cochlear implants off. ... My dog Ace smelled it," Lamb said. "I just wanted to get out."



The fire-blackened home had $175,000 in damage. But Ace and Lamb made it out safely. No one else was home when the fire started.



Lindsay Bernard, Lamb's mother, says she rushed home from work after getting the call. Her mind was racing throughout the trip. "I went into a little bit of a panic," she said. Deaf Outraged Over Fake Sign Language Interpreter At Mandela Memorial

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO [CC] - The international Deaf community is angry over what they say was a fake sign language interpreter used at Mandela's memorial.



JOHANNESBURG - 'Fake' Mandela memorial sign language interpreter incites anger. It was an event the whole world was watching, but some Deaf people couldn't understand a word spoken at Mandela’s memorial and took to Twitter to vent their frustration.



Allegations have been made that the sign language interpreter used at the memorial may have been unqualified.



Braam Jordaan, a Deaf South African citizen and board member of the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section (WDFYS), told SBS he believes the interpreter is a fake.



"The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying," he told SBS via email.

Mr Jordaan says the interpreter, who was signing for a portion of the ceremony including Obama's speech, was simply making up his own signs.



"I was really upset and humiliated by the mystery interpreter who was supposed to be signing what Barack Obama, the president of United States of America was saying," he says. "He made up his own signs."



"What happened at the memorial service is truly disgraceful thing to see - it should not happen at all.



"What happened today will be forever aligned with Nelson Mandela & Deaf Community, thanks to this fake interpreter."



Mr Jordaan says there have been question marks over the same interpretor at previous ANC events.

The Oceania representative for the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI), Sheena Walters, also states that the signing used was not recognisable as any accepted form of international or South African sign language.
