WFD - A Voice For Deaf Refugees

VIDEO [CC] - World Federation of the Deaf - A Voice for Deaf Refugees in American Sign Language by Isidore Niyongabo.

This video is about the first initiative to promote proper identification and humanitarian services for Deaf people in refugees camp, particularly those in developing countries.

It is a narrative debriefing of the first phase of this campaign as the the Author will travel to Republic of Turkey to present his research and findings at the World Federation of the Deaf World Congress in July 2015.

The purpose of this video if to raise funds for the first phase of this project.

Friends, colleagues and future unknown donnors, could you imagine being a Deaf person in living in refugee or displaced camps or striving through natural disasters or war zone in developing countries? Well, I have lived half my life through and I know first-hand how hard it can be. During my Graduate studies at the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, I was given the provileges to explore the current situation faced by other millions of Deaf men, women and children in developing countries.

There are unnacounted millions of Deaf refugees all over the world and currently, the United Nations High Commissariat on Refugees (UNHCR) and almost all international humanitarian organizations do not possess any system or procedures to properly identify refugees who are Deaf and provide them with proper humanitarian services or protections... Fund This Film: Deaf Filmmaker’s ‘Jester’

VIDEO [CC] - Fund This Film: Deaf Filmmaker’s ‘Jester’ Is Inspired By His Experience Hearing Music For the First Time.

Jester is a film based on my experience growing up in a silent world and hearing music for the first time at 23 years old.

This is a semi-autobiographical journey through the highs and lows of growing up in a silent world.

Picasso famously said that 'Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.' This was the guiding philosophy behind my short film 'Eleven Eleven' and now Jester... Picasso often painted and sculpted jesters throughout his career. My favorite work by him served as a major inspiration for this feature.

The short film (Eleven Eleven) became a catalyst for Jester, which builds on that world and covers the broader strokes of my life's defining moments. It is a comedy and tragedy. (both the short and feature).

My friends suggested I write about my first exposure to music and I ended up posting my story to reddit.com where it received over 14 thousand responses from some really amazing people who introduced me to the beautiful world of sound.

The film's main language is spoken english but with a healthy dose of American Sign Language. As in the indro video above, my character signs and talks at the same time. My best friend in the film only signs so the whole film will be subtitled in english. (Hopefully other languages too)

I know it's a bit unorthodox to have subtitles burned into the film rather than have them available as an option but this film wouldn't be authentic if I ignored the beautiful American Sign Language. Very few films use sign language and I would be proud to add Jester to that collection.

I've been actively working on this screenplay my whole life and have finally finished a draft ready for production. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/607852630/jester

As most websites do, we here at FSR get tons of emails from people trying to sell us on something, and a large number of them start off with the writer claiming to be a huge fan of the site for a long time. But usually you can tell that it’s b.s. The one I got from Austin Chapman last week, though, was genuine. The guy has indeed been reading us for years, and I can find his comments to prove it. That sincerity makes me want to support his dream and goal to make a feature film even more. It also translates to his filmmaking, which has the sort of heart, passion and beauty that can only come from someone with great honesty and care. He’s also been shooting movies since he was a little kid, so the experience of doing this for a while helps, too. The new project will be his first feature, and it’s called Jester.

I should point out that Chapman is profoundly Deaf, because that’s not only why he’s been getting some media coverage about his crowdfunding effort but it’s also something that informs this film. Jester will be sort of an extended remake of his 2011 short Eleven Eleven (pictured above), in which he starred in a semi-autobiographical story of a young Deaf man falling in love. (You should watch that 13-minute work, which I’m not alone in saying has a sort of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tone, here.) Since that film was made Chapman got new hearing aids that allowed him to hear music for the first time, understandably changing his life very dramatically. Especially as an artist. The feature version will apparently incorporate that new experience. ... Manitoba Deaf Athletes To Get More Sign Language Help

Manitoba Deaf athletes to get more sign language help. Province to spend up to $40K a year for interpreters following human rights complaint.

WINNIPEG - CBC News - The father of a Deaf athlete from Winnipeg says he is pleased to hear Manitoba will now be providing interpreters to help other deaf players communicate.

The Manitoba government will set aside up to $40,000 a year to help Deaf children participating in amateur sport communicate with their teammates, coaches and game officials, following a human rights complaint.

Two parents of Deaf children initially approached the Manitoba Human Rights Commission complaining that lack of money for sign language services made it harder for some Deaf children to participate in sports.

The parents said the lack of interpretive services meant their children couldn't participate fully in sports, develop leadership skills and have the same advantages as their peers.

One of the complainants, Rick Zimmer, says his son, Cody, wanted to play soccer but couldn't because there was no interpreter available for him and other Deaf players. ... Read more story.

Switched at Birth Actress Asks Community To Help Funds For Deaf Children

VIDEO [ASL] - Switched at Birth actress asks community to help raise funds for ESD (Evangelical School for the Deaf) for a better future. An important message from her heart for the Deaf community.

Stephanie Nogueras, is an actress who plays Natalie on the show ‘Switched at Birth’. Stephanie is issuing a call to action, inviting community to be part of the solution to explain why she is doing a good cause, to raise Deaf awareness in Puerto Rico for a better future. www.gofundme.com/fundesd

Look at USA, already have a several Deaf organizations, events, clubs, sports, etc. A strong Deaf community which is close knit. Many Deaf Americans are proud for who they are, socializing with Deaf/HOH people often, and supportive each other. What about Puerto Rico? Where is that? Secondly, less than 5% Hearing families with Deaf child who can communicate in sign language in Puerto Rico (Documented by David and Marsha.) Can you believe that? 2013?

Deaf schools and mainstreamed schools are in need to improve education system for the Deaf children. I asked a teacher about the Deaf children, she mentioned that most Deaf children have no self esteem or no role models to look up at. They need to grow their self esteem to love themselves. They need to have a role model to look up at so they can achieve anything they dream.

It is time to raise Deaf awareness for a better future!

My volunteers & I are looking forward to visiting Puerto Rico on this Fall. We will be interacting with Deaf Puerto Ricans within the Deaf Community. Deaf children and women are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Prince Harry Learns Sign Language

VIDEO: Prince Harry learns sign language: Prince Harry gives a nod to his late mother's fundraising work during his own charity mission to Africa.

LESOTHO - Prince Harry has made a visit to an African community to take a lesson in sign language at a school for Deaf and Blind children. The Prince mentioned Diana, Princess of Wales, as he gave a speech at a gala dinner for his Sentebale charity.

Earlier in the day, he met youngsters at a school for Deaf children in Lesotho, where he learned sign language and took part in a kneeling dance.

The royal hopes to raise £2.5m to build the Mamohato Centre, which will provide psychological care and offer mentoring to children with HIV/Aids.

"It seems only right that it should be named after His Majesty (of Lesotho) and Prince Seeiso's mother, Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso," he said in his speech in Johannesburg. "She was so loved as the mother of the nation. I hope she would be proud of what we are trying to achieve in her name.

"I hope that my mother will be proud, too. Maybe, just maybe, they are together somewhere up there, with blueprints and sketches already mapped out. I can only hope we put the swings in the right place."

Harry told guests that the Mamohato programme was already "transforming the lives of children living with HIV". He said: "I have met some of the children who have attended the Mamohato Camps, and they have so much more confidence and knowledge of how to live healthy lives."

During his visit to the Kananelo Centre for the Deaf on the outskirts of Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, the Prince was seen writing on a blackboard and laughing with the children. He joined the country's Prince Seeiso for a cookery class, making a kind of doughnut known in the local Sesotho language as makoenya.

Sky News' special correspondent Alex Crawford, in the capital, said: "He interacts incredibly beautifully with young people, even those who are Deaf, when communication is obviously an issue.

"But he was learning and asking them through sign language experts what their favourite subjects were at school and they were all really straining to talk to him, obviously overwhelmed by him." ... Read more: http://news.sky.com/story/1057572/prince-harry-i-hope-diana-is-proud-of-me

Michael Hubbs, Deaf, Olympic Hopeful, A Fraud ?

VIDEO: Michael Hubbs, Deaf, Olympic Hopeful, and a Fraud?

deafndumb.com - Michael Hubbs a Fraud: Still recalling the experience as clear as day, six years ago, when I first met this man, Michael Hubbs, back when I was just twenty years old. Coincidentally riding together on the Gallaudet bus over to the Union Station, and apparently so, one curious enough to entice a conversation with me.

Mike sat besides me from my aisle as we rode along without any passengers around. A new face, I thought as I really didn't care much about this person. With one's hair slicked back, a black t-shirt worn with tan cargo shorts, and some grey running shoes on. Waving to get my attention, one asked with a jittery composure, "what's your name?" signing with his mouth open, revealing his pearly white teeth, "do you work out?" as I was already unable to respond to his first inquiry...

'I AM' - Michael Hubbs.

"Clyde..." I responded... although a bit more eagerly, I then added, "yeah... I do work out, it's all that I ever do." Meh, meh, meh... as a Deafie would gesture with one's lips, acknowledging with intrigue, Mike then asked, "how much do you bench?" "Do you squat?" Again... asking several questions without the proper knowledge of how to actually converse with somebody. I nodded along, "315 lbs... I squat okay, 315 lbs as well." Shaking his head, "that's bad!" he, already, went onto criticize me, as we were passing by New York Ave, onwards Union Station.

Naturally being distracted, I peered out the bus window to see who may have been waiting outside for the bus once only to find that there was nobody else around, before redirecting my attention t'wards Mr. Hubbs, "So hey... where are you going?" he asked. "Pentagon City Mall," I said, "to buy myself some protein and to bullshit around I guess." Meh, meh, meh, Mike did again with his stupid lips, still staring at me with those eyes jolted of such energy that's often found unmatched with most people that I've met. "Mind if I join you? I'm just metro-ing around to get some idea of Washington D.C. before I decide that I enroll myself in Gallaudet University." ... UPDATE: Michael Hubbs Statement on DeafNDumb.com: "This will be the ONLY ONE TIME statement from me. It’s going to be simple. I have not made any comments ANYWHERE about this blog until now. I took the time to sit back and remain calm. This is a new experience for me. I am not going to make any comments about the blog telling if it was true or not. It does not matter. The point is that you need to ask yourself few questions. Do you really know me? What is the goal of this blog? What exactly is he trying to do and trying to win? Do you know the author? Do you know his history? Everything on the blog is the truth? Have you look at his facebook reading many different comments that he made? Am I the only one that he is pointing at? Why hold the past when it was about 6 or 7 years ago? The truth is let the ACTION do the talk."

Florida School For The Deaf & The Blind $10 Million For Upgrades

Florida School for Deaf and Blind seeks about $10 million for upgrades.

TALLAHASSEE - Repairing buildings and making construction upgrades makes up the meat of a funding request being pitched by the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine.

The school is asking for $9.7 million in construction money, a steep increase over the $1.4 million in Gov. Rick Scott’s proposed budget and the $1.6 million it got last year. The $1.4 million is the same amount requested by the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the school’s budget.

“With that amount we would barley be able to touch projects needed to ensure safety-related repairs,” said Jeanne Prickett, the school’s president.

With the money, the school wants to fund preventive maintenance, repair projects and remain compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.

“That means we would be able to continue to keep up-to-date buildings and renovate obsolete areas,” Prickett told the House Appropriations Subcommittee during a Tuesday hearing.

Since 2008, the school’s construction funding has dropped by $11.8 million. The funding comes from the same shrinking pot of money used for higher education and k-12 projects. Lawmakers are working to overhaul the system, which is funded by taxes on certain communications and telecommunications.

Students on the School for the Deaf and the Blind’s 80-acre campus have increased from 585 to 610 over the past five years, officials said. Overall enrollment, which includes off-campus students, has increased from 904 to 989 over that time. ...
