Deaf Teacher Aide Sentenced 10 Years For Sexual Assault

Exclusive: Teaching assistant gets 10 years for sexually assaulting Deaf student in Hawaii.

HONOLULU - A state judge sentenced former Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind teaching assistant Alfie S. Lumabas to 10 years in prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student at the school.

State Circuit Judge Rom A. Trader declined the city prosecutor's request to impose restitution to pay for the girl's counseling because that expense is covered by a settlement to a separate federal lawsuit.

Lumabas, 38, agreed to serve a full 10-year prison term when he pleaded guilty in January to two reduced counts of second-degree sexual assault in a deal with the prosecutor. Ten years is the maximum penalty for second-degree sexual assault.

A September 2013 indictment charged him with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, which each carry a mandatory 20-year prison term.

Lumabas is legally Deaf. Through a sign-language interpreter, he declined to make a statement Tuesday before Trader handed down his sentence.

His victim, now 24, and who is also legally Deaf, had plenty to say through her own sign-language interpreter. SOURCE

VIDEO - Sex offences claim at Donaldson's school for Deaf children in Scotland.

Donaldson's schoolLINLITHGOW - Police are looking into claims sexual offences were carried out at the national school for Deaf children.

Donaldson's School in Linlithgow has been given a week to come up with a plan to deal with serious concerns about the way the school is being run.

Police are also assessing allegations. It is understood they relate to claims of serious sexual offences and how some people at the school responded to them. The school said it was unable to comment at this time.

A spokesperson said: "This is a sensitive matter and with internal investigations ongoing, we are unable to comment on the names, job titles or any other specifics of this case".

BBC Scotland understands some allegations are historical in nature.

Insufficient progress: Donaldson's is a grant-aided special school (GASS) supported by the Scottish government.

Local authorities from all over Scotland and the north of England refer pupils there and fund their placements. The notice calling for an improvement plan within a week is the first of its kind to be issued for 15 years.

A report from Education Scotland last year criticised leadership at the school - and a follow up report said insufficient progress was being made putting things right.

The school has stressed its first priority is always the safety and wellbeing of pupils and a new principal was recently appointed. Work is underway to come up with the improvement plan before the deadline. Source

RIVERSIDE, CA - At least 90 teenagers at California School for the Deaf, Riverside, left morning classes Thursday, Oct. 31, to protest the replacement of the high school boys’ basketball coach.

Students demonstrated outside the gym over what they said was the forced resignation of coach Jeremias Valencia and the hiring of former coach David Hamilton.

“We don’t want him to be our coach,” 11th grader Miranda Murphy wrote. “We’re trying to get Jeremias back.”

The California Department of Education issued a statement from Riverside campus Superintendent Mal Grossinger.

“I can appreciate that the students in question feel strongly about who serves as their basketball coach, but this is ultimately a personnel decision that had to be made by administrators,” Grossinger said. “We will continue to encourage the students to return to class and discuss more constructive ways to share their views.”

VIDEO: Deaf couple killed in hit-and-run by semi truck in florida. Camera image of a truck believed to be identified in a fatal hit and run crash.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - WPTV: The Florida Highway Patrol has identified a person of interest in the fatal hit-and-run crash that left two young people dead Monday evening on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 166 in Fort Pierce.

Robert Bates, a 68-year-old resident of Sanford, Florida, was identified as a person of interest in the accident that killed 19-year-old Mariah A. King and 24-year-old Vincent T. Mathews as they attempted to change a tire on their PT Cruiser around 8 p.m., according to Sgt. Mark Wysocky, spokesman for FHP.

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier Tuesday morning FHP investigators traveled to Orlando to question a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run wreck. They told WPTV that they had spoken with the suspect and had recovered the rig.

However, Tuesday evening FHP said in a media release that investigators did not find the person of interest at home and had not recovered the 2006 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer believed to have been involved in the fatal accident. Investigators did speak with representatives of Mercer Transport of Louisville, Ky,, the registered owner of the semi, regarding the investigation and said company officials were cooperating.

WPTV reached out to family members of both victims but they declined to comment. However, they said they were devastated. One family member did confirm the two were visiting friends further south and were on their way back home to Lakeland. FHP investigators called the site tragic.

"Anytime you're attempting to change your tire and a car veered off the road and hit the people…it's going to be a tragic site," said Sgt. Wysocky. DANVILLE, Mo. (ABC News) - A charter bus carrying students from the Missouri School for the Deaf overturned along an interstate in eastern Missouri on Friday, sending 15 children and three adults to a hospital but causing no life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. as the eastbound bus was exiting Interstate 70 near Danville, about 75 miles west of St. Louis.

The children, who were between ages 10 and 18, were treated in the emergency room at University Hospital in Columbia, along with the bus driver and two chaperones, hospitals spokeswoman Mary Jenkins said. She said the adults' injuries also appeared not to be life-threatening.

The superintendent of the Fulton school went to the hospital to help translate for the children. Jenkins said the hospital also brought in eight sign-language interpreters to help the children communicate.

Blood Donations Honors Deaf Young Woman

Blood drive honors leader in Deaf community, beyond.

OLATHE, Kan. - Fox4kc.com: Fellow students and friends of a young woman who died in January from lung and heart complications held a blood drive Thursday in her honor.

Mary Margaret Grove was 18 and committed to both serving and leading at the Kansas State School for the Deaf in Olathe, where she was a high school senior.

Blood drives were among Mary Grover’s many passions as she served the community and donated her time and talents. When Mary was young, she needed platelet transfusions to help her body overcome blood clotting problems, and it became an important part of her service.

On Thursday, her family and friends teamed up with the American Red Cross for a blood drive at her school.

“I never really wanted to before. I don’t need to do that. And then you know, once we lost her I thought, you know what, today’s pretty special, I’m gong to go ahead and in honor of Mary I’m going to donate my blood. And having people here, it’s really nice to honor her,” said Alfonso Torres, who had known Mary since 3rd grade.

Many of those who organized and participated in the blood drive said it will continue to be a passion for them. ...READ MORE: http://fox4kc.com/2013/05/02/blood-drive-honors-leader-in-deaf-community-beyond/

Arizona Deaf Schools: Students Protest, Demand Action

VIDEO: Arizona probes accusation of conflicts at Arizona Schools for the Deaf & Blind, Superintendent, board president focus of protests, complaints.

TUCSON, AZ. - Two state agencies are investigating the superintendent and board president of the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind for potential conflicts of interest and excessive travel expenses.

Superintendent Robert Hill and ASDB Board President Bernhardt Jones also have been the focus of multiple protests at school's two main campuses in Tucson and Phoenix over the last two weeks. Students, parents and former employees have called for the two to resign because of a lack of leadership and poor communication with the staff.

Among the concerns:

• Possible conflicts of interest: Hill and Jones have a private business relationship outside their ASDB positions. Jones is the director of TASK12, which administers the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment for a $310 testing fee. Hill is listed as a TASK12 local test administrator at classroominterpreting.org. Arizona Schools for the Deaf & Blind Board of Directors: Acknowledge the vote of "No Confidence" in Superintendent Robert Hill - Five years ago, parents, staff, and community members gathered to ensure that Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind's campuses were truly accessible to American Sign Language (ASL) for the students and staff as well as fostering positive changes in the curriculum in order to advance deaf education.

Today, we find that our students' education is now at risk because of haphazard administrative decisions and questionable conduct by Superintendent Robert Hill, including several allegations of discriminatory conduct in regards to staff (female/sexual) and disability (Deaf).

Nearly 50 ASDB staff members have already personally signed the following statement: We, the members of the ASDB community including staff, parents, alumni, and friends, sign this petition as a Vote of No Confidence in Robert Hill's continued service as Superintendent of ASDB.

Structural Violence: Deaf Education Box

VIDEO [ASL] - Question: Why are our Deaf students across the nation underperforming in academics? We give them a wide array of 'communication options' - speech therapy, hearing-aids, cochlear implants, sim-com, cued speech, total communication, signed-exact-English/PSE interpreters, note-taking services - they don't need their American Sign Language with our "least restrictive environment."

Answer: "One cannot expect positive results from an educational or political action program which fails to respect the particular view of the world held by the people. Such a program constitutes cultural invasion, good intentions notwithstanding."

Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

Thought: We wanted to 'communicate' with our Deaf child in spoken English -- even if only slightly -- so we decided to forbid her use of sign language, even though it is the only natural, robust, and fully accessible language for a Deaf child.

Rebuttal: "Any situation in which some men prevent others from engaging in the process of inquiry is one of violence; ... to alienate humans from their own decision making is to change them into objects."

Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

Question: What can I do? I'm just a teacher.

Answer: "The educator has the duty of not being neutral."

Paulo Freire, We Make the Road by Walking: Conversations on Education and Social Change.

Anti-Bullying At Florida School For The Deaf

VIDEO [CC] - Florida School for the Deaf and Blind takes anti-bullying stand.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL - Since the implementation of the Jeffrey Johnston "Stand up for All Students" Act, which was passed in 2008, all schools in the state are required to have anti-bullying policies in place.

The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine is just one district working to eliminate bullying. Students from elementary through high school are learning about the importance of being respectful, responsible and cooperative.

"She was teasing me like 'I didn't know the words, I didn't know the English language," said student Julia Kadzis.

"In my last school, I had no friends. No one would talk to me really," explains freshman Gracie Delong.

"I've had lots of experiences with bullying here and in the world, and I've tolerated it," said senior D.J. Snell.

Students at FSDB recall their own personal experiences with bullying. "They kept bullying me because I'm a Deaf person," Snell said.

"No one would talk to me really, no one would sit next to me at the lunch table," said Delong. "And the same group of girls would bully me because they didn't think I could see certain things." ...Read more: http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/local/article/FSDB-takes-anti-bullying-stand
