The number doesn't actually matter. What's cool to realize is that it's way more than we previously thought. What's important is that the level, sensitivity, and use that HUMANS get out of a sense isn't uniform across the board. No matter how we may appear to fit the current social construct of 'normal.'
Why does this happen? Because of biodiversity. And the concept of biodiversity is important why?
Many reasons. Here's a big one:
Because the social model of disability has told us for years, that, "while physical, sensory, intellectual, or psychological variations may cause individual functional limitation or impairments, these do not have to lead to a disability unless society fails to take account of and include people regardless of their individual differences."
With so much diversity of ability happening in every single person on the planet, it's amazing that a large majority have banded together to consider themselves "normal" (read: everybody is the exact same) while others are not. "The difference between the needs that many disabled people have and the needs of people who are not labelled as disabled is that non-disabled people have had their dependencies normalized. The world has been built to accommodate certain needs and call the people who need those things independent, while other needs are considered exception." (AJ Withers, "Disability Politics and Theory")
When we realize that we all have different abilities, and consequently, different needs, dependencies that are very real, even though they have been largely 'normalized.' Maybe this helps us see ourselves in others with a little bit more empathy, maybe we find a bit more compassion from within, maybe we recognize our humanity a bit more markedly, and maybe, we can build a more inclusive future. - ewitty

Deaf Designer Speaks Out On Myths About Deafness
EXCLUSIVE: Deaf 'Project Runway' designer speaks out on myths about deafness. The season 12 finalist dispels stereotypes and myths about deafness.
CHICAGO - In a "Project Runway" season where fights between contestants raged for hours, one of the finalists took refuge in what some would consider a disability: being Deaf.
Justin LeBlanc would turn down the volume on his cochlear implant or completely remove the external device, and he would focus on his designs. "It worked to my advantage," LeBlanc said. "It allowed me to block out all the drama."
LeBlanc fell short of the win, but by making it all the way to the final four, he helped educate the viewing and hearing public about being Deaf.
"A lot of people have never been around a deaf person," he said, though 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the U.S. are born Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Deaf Man Beaten To Death In His Home
Deaf man beaten to death in his home. His nose was broken, his larynx crushed and clumps of hair ripped from his head.
AURORA, Colorado. - Jonny Braning did a hilarious impression of Elvis. Though he was Deaf, the 48-year-old man had lived a full life.
The simple pleasures Jonny lived for seeing his granddaughter and making people smile were all taken from him between Feb. 26 and March 7, 2002, when someone bludgeoned him to death in his small Aurora apartment.
Robbery may have been the intent, according to a story by former Rocky Mountain News reporter Sarah Huntley. But it was hard for investigators to understand why.
Jonny was living on disability and didn’t have much money, Huntley reported.
Over the years he had worked for King Soopers, Jolly Rancher and as a janitor for a telecommunications company. But he was unemployed and lived on his monthly disability check. He would go to a corner store and write a note for a clerk when he needed something.
He lived in a small apartment at 1097 S. Evanston Way.
It appeared that whoever killed Jonny first attacked him in his bedroom, possibly with some type of blunt weapon, which was never found. Apparently a battle continued into his living room.
His body was found lying on the floor in his living room by maintenance workers who became worried when they realized they hadn’t seen the man, who was a fixture of the complex, in days. Deaf Awareness: 'Hear No Evil' Short Film
VIDEO: 'Hear No Evil' is a film that follows a day in the life of James, a Deaf student who is falling behind at university, and who feels alone in the world as a result of his disability.
A fantastic performance from actor Patrick Roberts, along with cutting edge sound design by Canadian artist Sebastien Hebert (aka. Sleeping On Lotus Ashes), make this film unique in its approach to portray emotion without resorting to dialogue.
The entire film was shot in one day using a Canon EOS 60D. Edited in Final Cut Pro, graded in Apple Color. Visit http://www.joshbedford.com/
