Deaf Lifestyle - Oralism Versus Manualism

Deaf News: Isolating Deaf youngsters from the Deaf community might not be in their best interests in the United Kingdom.

Article by Sarah Lawrence from Slfirst magazine - States of the art hearing aids and cochlear implants might not translate to mainstream achievements.

Born into a hearing family and brought up in mainstream education, neither my parents or the teachers for the deaf, had any knowledge of the local Deaf community. In fact, in the same way that my ‘teacher for the deaf’ discouraged me from learning sign language, in many respects I was also advised not to have anything to do with the Deaf community.

Being strong willed and recognising that I was different to other children in the school (lots of them made sure I knew that), I went on to make my own mind up about what was best for me, my decisions differing markedly from what the ‘teacher of the deaf’ and social worker for the deaf, had suggested was in my best interest. Right or wrong, they were my decisions, and my life has been enriched by being involved in a wide range of Deaf community groups and activities ever since.

Because of my links to and involvement in the Deaf community, I have developed my own identity in life, I have friends who understand the issues I face every day, who support me, and I have people who share the passion I have for reaching a stage when society concentrates on what we can do, rather than the simple fact we cannot hear and might not be able to talk.

Being a part of the Deaf community, I learned all about Deaf sport and Deaf activities, and getting involved has meant that I have travelled all over the United Kingdom and internationally to take part in sport. Through these travels I have learned about Deaf life in other countries and had the chance to meet people who greet me as a long lost friend when we meet up again.

It’s not all chocolates and roses of course, as people face a wide range of issues and Deaf Club or a Deaf social event is a good place to seek help and advice about how to tackle that. Overwhelmingly though, having a Deaf identity and being a part of a Deaf community has been a huge positive in my life, adding great value, and helping me make sense of many of the problems and barriers I experience in my life. I knew and still know today, that those problems and barriers are not personal attacks on me... Ireland Ignores Legal Recognition Sign Languages

Deaf News: Sign language gives tens of thousands of Irish people the priceless gift of communication but it's still unrecognised as an official language by the Irish State.

DUBLIN, IRELAND - Now, 40 local authorities are heaping pressure on the Government to fully recognise Irish Sign Language (ISL) as an official language, the Sunday Independent has learned.

More than a year after the Seanad rejected a bill to legally recognise ISL, county and city councils, all over the country, have passed a motion on the issue to "help put pressure on local TDs".

After more than 30 years of campaigning, Eddie Redmond CEO of the Irish Deaf Society (IDS) says the community still feels hugely isolated and ignored at national level.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Redmond said: "The Government have been avoiding the issue. There is huge uproar among the Deaf community, because we are cut off from access to information.

"Every citizen should have access to services as a human right, and until there is adequate provision, the Deaf community will continue to be discriminated against and there will be a constant invalidation," he said.

Eight years ago, the Irish government signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which contains duties towards native sign languages. To date, Ireland remains one of the few European countries that have not ratified the convention into law.

Meanwhile, 45 other countries - including the UK and Northern Ireland - have granted legal status to their own unique sign language... Read more: http://independent.ie/irish-news/news/deaf-community-roar-for-recognition-of-sign-language.html

Audree Norton, Pioneering Deaf Actress Dies At 88

Deaf News: Audree Lauraine Norton, Pioneering Deaf Actress, Dies at 88.

Hollywood Reporter - Audree Norton, who many consider the first Deaf actress to appear in a featured role on an American network TV series, has died. She was 88.

Norton, a founding member of The National Theatre of the Deaf, died April 22 in Fremont, Calif., her family announced.

In September 1968, on “The Silent Cry,” the episode that kicked off the second season of the CBS crime drama Mannix, Norton starred as a Deaf woman who, while reading the lips of a man talking inside a phone booth, realizes that he’s plotting to kidnap someone.

She seeks out good-guy private detective Joe Mannix (Mike Connors). He investigates, putting their lives in jeopardy.

Norton would later appear on such series as Family Affair and The Streets of San Francisco.

Norton also played a Deaf mother who wanted to adopt a child in a 1971 episode of ABC’s The Man and the City, and she and her husband, Kenneth, who also was Deaf, auditioned for roles as parents in a 1978 ABC Afterschool Special titled “Mom and Dad Can’t Hear Me.”

According to the 1988 book Hollywood Speaks: Deafness and he Film Entertainment Industry, written by John S. Schuchman, a casting director told Norton that “of all the people, you and your husband won the roles. But you are out because the director is afraid to use Deaf actors and actresses.”

Instead, Priscilla Pointer and Stephen Elliott were cast, and Norton filed a complaint with the Screen Actors Guild. Schuchman suggests that Norton’s grievance cost her a career in television but paved the way for other Deaf actors to work... Deaf Actors - Choose Not To or Can't Speak ?

VIDEO [CC] - Viola Rose Muir: Deaf actors in Hollywood that choose not to or can't speak?

A summary about Viola Rose Muir experience in NYC acting class with 2 of 3 agents expecting her to speak. Quotes: "You know, in Hollywood, the hearing folks, I mean, many Deaf actors can talk, and to receive that feedback was not surprising. Then the casting director said, "Make sure you send these agents a thank you card." I had a thought so I raised my hand to ask Paul a question, "In that thank you card, I wanted to put in the word, 'Audism'."

He was intrigued and asked what it was and I explained that, "Audism is a form of oppression, 'you can speak, you must speak, you must hear, the expectation of Deaf/HOH having to act like a hearing person, oppressing us by thinking that hearing people are better than Deaf or Hard of hearing people, that kind of attitude or way of thinking."

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Paul was cautious and said, "Make sure you don't sound so defensive but you can talk and use it as your marketability skill." I said, "I know, right-right, that's fine, sure, but what about those Deaf people who can't talk at all and they want to get into Hollywood and to be in movies. That's not fair. Saying, "Lines are supposed to be spoken", that's not reality, that's not our world today, our world is so diverse, we have different and all kinds of people, they can't just limit by saying, "You must speak only.", that's not realistic.... Why are Christians so offended at the idea of Jesus as a black man? Surely, this is not a blasphemy, right? This video is a self-examination on the issue of Racism. If Christians get offended at the idea of Black Jesus, is this a subtle form of Racism?

Deaf Boy Viciously Attacked By Dogs

VIDEO: Nine-year-old sister saves her Deaf brother from vicious dog attack.

This video contains extremely graphic material. Viewer discretion is advised.

MOORE, OKLA (KFOR) - A boy is learning how to walk again after three Rottweiler dogs attacked him Saturday.

The family of 10-year-old Elijah says his 9-year-old sister saved him, and he is lucky to be alive. More than 40 stitches later, his little sister shares what happened.

“I wanted to go check on him, but then I just heard them screaming and yelling and I started running,” Alyssa McKenna, Elijah’s sister says. She was running to help her brother who is Deaf.

“I saw his orange shirt and a belt, then I saw his hair and I saw him moving a lot and I saw the dogs biting him,” Alyssa said. Elijah’s sister says she found him by a dirt road not far from their grandmother’s home. The three dogs were attacking him, so she took matters into her own hands to save him.

“I picked him up…he couldn’t walk, he just fell right over again, so I picked him up from where we were standing and I picked him up and carried him,” Alyssa said.

They eventually got Elijah to the hospital; he went straight to the OU trauma center where he immediately went into surgery. “He had two wide cuts on his head, he had to get over 40 staples on his head,” Alyssa says. Pictures don’t begin to show the deep wounds he received from the three dogs.

“I’ve never seen injuries like this from a dog,” Rhianna Bravenec, Elijah and Alyssa’s mom said. “He had a gash all the way down from his neck to the top of his head.” But his mother is thankful he’s alive... Deaf Bulgarians The Equal Access Campaign

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Заслушай се - Campaign from Bulgarian public’s awareness of hearing health.

Заслушай се in Bulgarian, is an information campaign managed by a foundation of the same name which focuses public attention on the challenges people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing face and raises the Bulgarian public’s awareness of hearing health.

Our team is made up entirely of volunteers. Some are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, others cannot but lend an ear to the cause. Our common goal is to ensure equal access for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to information, education and professional development as well as their appropriate involvement in public life.

We work to raise the awareness of hearing health and will provide information about the dangers of noise pollution and the ways to protect one’s hearings.

At present, more than 120,000 people in Bulgaria have various degrees of hearing loss. A large part of them rely mainly on sign language as a means of daily communication and the need for professional sign language interpreters is ever growing. This is why we will support the creation of a modern national centre for sign language and services.

The Listen up campaign team works to improve the access to information and communication through the use of information technologies by all people with hearing loss. Visit us for more details http://zaslushaise.bg.

DeaFined - Canada's New Deaf Restaurant

VIDEO: Deafined Breaks Down Barriers - Vancouver’s First ‘Deaf Restaurant’ Teaches Diners To Order in American Sign Language.

VANCOUVER, CANADA - A new Vancouver restaurant is encouraging diners to order with their hands - DeaFined, opening May 7 on West 4th Avenue near Vine Street in Kitsilano, is staffed entirely by Deaf and Hard of Hearing servers. Among the first of its kind in Canada, the Eastern Mediterranean restaurant asks customers to order food and drinks using American Sign Language.

For those who don’t know how to sign, there’s no need to fret. “There’s a cheat sheet on the table with the menu,” said owner Moe Alameddine. “The server comes up to take the order, and the fun part starts there.”

In the mood for steak? Grab the fleshy part of your left hand with the index finger and thumb of your right hand, and wiggle a bit as if getting a good grip on the meat. How about salad? Use both hands and picture yourself tossing some greens.

When customers arrive at the DeaFined, a hearing host or hostess greets them and acts as an interpreter while they introduce the server.

Alameddine came up with the idea after starting his popular blind-dining restaurant O.Noir in Montreal and Toronto and Dark Table in Vancouver, where guests dine in complete darkness while they are served by visually impaired staff. The concept aims to give customers a taste, albeit briefly, of what it’s like to be blind.

Although the business helped provide jobs for Blind people, Alameddine said he realized a need for employment opportunities to benefit the Deaf community.

Only two other North American establishments - Signs Restaurant in Toronto, which hires mostly Deaf servers, and Mozzeria, a pizza restaurant in San Francisco, which has a Deaf owner and staff have a focus on hiring Deaf staff...
