Verdict in Deaf School Sex Abuse Case

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Man found guilty of sex abuse at Maryland School for the Deaf. Taylor III guilty of two counts, jury fails to reach decision on four others.

JESSUP, MD - A Howard County Circuit Court jury in the Maryland School for the Deaf sex abuse case handed down a mixed result Wedneday, finding the defendant guilty of two charges of child sexual abuse, not guilty of one count and declaring a mistrial in the four remaining counts.

Clarence Cepheus Taylor III, 38, was found guilty by the 12-member jury, who began deliberations Friday, of groping two girls while working as an aide at the school from 2008 to 2011.

Taylor, who is Deaf, had his bond revoked by Judge William Tucker and is scheduled to be sentenced on the two guilty verdicts on Jan. 31, 2014, with a retrial on the four non-decision counts scheduled for May 21, 2014.

A split verdict is reached by jurors and a mistrial is declared by the judge for some charges in the Howard County sexual abuse trial of a former aide for the Maryland School for the Deaf. Barry Simms files this report on 11 News at Noon.

Earlier in the trial, three counts of solicitation of child pornography were dropped by the State's Attorney's office after the prosecution could not prove the events happened in Howard County.

Those charges accused Taylor of text messaging three of the students and requesting pictures of their breasts, according to the prosecution.

Taylor faces a maximum of 50 years in prison 25 years for each guilty count. According to prosecutor and Assistant State's Attorney Lisa Broten, the state's recommendations for such convictions usually fall between seven and 13 years per count.

As Taylor was handcuffed after his bond was revoked, his wife, who is on leave from her employment at the school, left the courtroom fighthing tears.

A split verdict was reached in the sexual abuse trial of a former aide for the Maryland School for the Deaf, prompting the Howard County judge to call a mistrial for some charges.

Taylor's defense attorney, Brandon Mead, said he recommended Taylor file an appeal, citing Tucker's jury instructions. ... Read more: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/howard/columbia/ph-ho-cf-taylor-trial-verdict-story-20131113,0,2323185.story

Orangutan Asks Deaf Girl For Help On Skype

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Orangutan uses sign language to ask for help from Deaf girl.

The video goes viral by the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), and is intended to raise awareness of how the palm oil industry is destroying orangutans' natural habitats and driving the species to extinction.

The video shows a 12-year-old Deaf girl named Lena chitchatting with an orangutan named Strawberry via Skype. One thing leads to another, and Strawberry learns that Lena likes to eat peanut butter.

“Your food is destroying my home,” the orangutan tells the girl at this point.

Apparently, most of the palm oil used to make snacks and treats marketed in the US comes from plantations that used to be rainforests, but that have been converted into agricultural lands in order to support this industry.

“While some companies are beginning to take steps to address their oil palms problem, none have yet adopted and fully implemented adequate safeguards to eliminate conflict palm oil from entering their supply chains and contaminating their products,” RAN explains on the official website for this campaign. ... “Last week, a man carrying the same letter was seen on the Gallaudet University campus and was subsequently asked to leave and prohibited from returning,” said Theodore Baran, Director of Gallaudet University Department of Public Safety, in a released statement.

Deaf Newspaper Under Fire For Censorship

VIDEO: Deaf Newspaper Ken Davis is under fire for censorship social media users.

This story covers about the ceo and founder DeafNewspaper.com, Ken Davis is under fire for censorship to the tube users which recent reports made by public to the communities.

Ken Davis the reporter-newsman an America's newspaper web-site offers the communities a social networking for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and provides in American Sign Language.

First at all, YouTube offers display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including TV clips, as well as amateur content such as video blogging, freedom of expression, short original videos, and educational videos that use YouTube for the events. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, although media web-site including DeafNewspaper.

Second, the things Deaf individuals consistently find disgusting and sparked a chorus of outrage after Davis asks the followers to flag the video to censorship on them were found on facebook page among the false-filled messages that are used as insinuations or allegations individuals - a given concerns, critical, disagree, disapprove or speech manner in the ASL-signing regarding Ken Davis' comments/videos.

Ken Davis asks the followers as they recognize the influence opportunities in a situation and take advantage to convince by flagging to censorship the videos as you can see some of the vloggers find concerns and responses has reacted to a video showing, Deafnewspaper: Reply to Ken Davis,... Shame on you, Ken Davis!,... Once again, shame on you, Ken Davis!,... Liar, Liar, your pants on FIRE, Ken Davis

Ken Davis statement on Facebook and YouTube to asking the followers to given a flagging - who are disapproving or disagreeing, according to his youtube and facebook page.

"Hello Friends and Fans,

Donna Fine's video at youtube is "Hateful and Abusive Content" about me. I'm in "Hateful and Abusive Content" by Youtube's Policy from Donna Fine. Some of you already flagged it at her youtube. I checked it at youtube and her video is still there. I puzzled that our flagged are not working. Hmm.

I know that Youtube is concerning on "Hateful and Abusive Content"

And another statement:

"Other person who talked a bad thing about Ken Davis to all public. If you disgree with her, please report it to YouTube or Flag it."

Therefore, the video responses to Davis that assumedly in "hateful and abusive content" which the video showed none of the hateful and abusive after all, perhaps the right to express any opinion in public without censorship, restraint or otherwise. Davis is unprofessionalism by asking the followers to flagging the YouTube users, eventually force to remove the videos - very totally completely wrong messages into publicly.

Davis asks the followers to helps to cover the sitautions of which the reasons may be avoiding embarrassment and humility has addresses into the public his wrongdoing messages and kind of makes it that much more illustrative.

It is clear that DeafNewspaper's facebook path has not been an easy one. It has been difficult in terms of integration, and for professional affirmation on the internet, and for even the possibility to study about the improper messages on the the internet.

Cochlear Implant Industry - 4000 Devices Affected

Signed Version - Cochlear Implant industry - 4000 devices affected around the world.

On the surface, cochlear implants sound like a promising medical solution to the problems surrounding hearing loss or total deafness. A cochlear implant uses existing nerves and electronic signals to override damaged auditory nerves, thus restoring a sense of hearing to the recipient.

However, this technology has also caused serious divisions within the Deaf community concerning the hearing society's position on deafness in general. Cochlear implants are considered disrespectful and insulting, since the medical community views deafness as a handicap which must be treated or corrected.

Gallaudet Football The Nation's First University For The Deaf

VIDEO [CC] - The storied football team of Gallaudet, the nation's first university for the Deaf. Football team's joy shines during one amazing season.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - (CBS News) Next spring marks the 150-year anniversary of a school called Gallaudet University, which became the first university in the country to focus on the Deaf.

Today, the school has more than 2,000 students. They also have a dominant and undefeated team on the football field.

When Coach Chuck Goldstein came to Gallaudet from his high school coaching job, he had a lot to learn.

Every member of the Bison football team is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, so he had to learn to sign language, and find other ways to communicate with his players.

"I've not used a whistle in five years," Goldstein said. "Our players can't hear whistles."

Gallaudet, the nation's first university for the Deaf, has a long and storied football program. The Bison invented the huddle, thought up by a quarterback in the 1890s as way to keep other players from seeing what they signed.

But the school, famous for its contribution to the game, wasn't particularly good at playing it.

Senior quarterback Todd Bonheyo said: "I think the hardest part of this season is actually believing that's real. Based on previous seasons, we've never had this type of luck or this type of winning streak. We always come up as a losing team and now we're the winning team."

This year, Gallaudet is 9-0, and in the running for the school's first men's NCAA Division Three championship.

The team only has 54 players, half the size of most in its division, but between the white lines, it only takes 11.

Senior Adham Talaat is a 6-foot-6-inch, 270-pound defensive end. He might also be the first Gallaudet player in history to make it to the NFL. ... Read more: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18563_162-57611737/the-storied-football-team-of-gallaudet-the-nations-first-university-for-the-deaf/

Deaf Designer Speaks Out On Myths About Deafness

EXCLUSIVE: Deaf 'Project Runway' designer speaks out on myths about deafness. The season 12 finalist dispels stereotypes and myths about deafness.

CHICAGO - In a "Project Runway" season where fights between contestants raged for hours, one of the finalists took refuge in what some would consider a disability: being Deaf.

Justin LeBlanc would turn down the volume on his cochlear implant or completely remove the external device, and he would focus on his designs. "It worked to my advantage," LeBlanc said. "It allowed me to block out all the drama."

LeBlanc fell short of the win, but by making it all the way to the final four, he helped educate the viewing and hearing public about being Deaf.

"A lot of people have never been around a deaf person," he said, though 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the U.S. are born Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

LeBlanc hopes his appearance on "Project Runway" helped dispel some assumptions, myths and stereotypes about deafness. Among the misperceptions: ... Fund This Film: Deaf Filmmaker’s ‘Jester’

VIDEO [CC] - Fund This Film: Deaf Filmmaker’s ‘Jester’ Is Inspired By His Experience Hearing Music For the First Time.

Jester is a film based on my experience growing up in a silent world and hearing music for the first time at 23 years old.

This is a semi-autobiographical journey through the highs and lows of growing up in a silent world.

Picasso famously said that 'Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.' This was the guiding philosophy behind my short film 'Eleven Eleven' and now Jester... Picasso often painted and sculpted jesters throughout his career. My favorite work by him served as a major inspiration for this feature.

The short film (Eleven Eleven) became a catalyst for Jester, which builds on that world and covers the broader strokes of my life's defining moments. It is a comedy and tragedy. (both the short and feature).

My friends suggested I write about my first exposure to music and I ended up posting my story to reddit.com where it received over 14 thousand responses from some really amazing people who introduced me to the beautiful world of sound.

The film's main language is spoken english but with a healthy dose of American Sign Language. As in the indro video above, my character signs and talks at the same time. My best friend in the film only signs so the whole film will be subtitled in english. (Hopefully other languages too)

I know it's a bit unorthodox to have subtitles burned into the film rather than have them available as an option but this film wouldn't be authentic if I ignored the beautiful American Sign Language. Very few films use sign language and I would be proud to add Jester to that collection.

I've been actively working on this screenplay my whole life and have finally finished a draft ready for production. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/607852630/jester

As most websites do, we here at FSR get tons of emails from people trying to sell us on something, and a large number of them start off with the writer claiming to be a huge fan of the site for a long time. But usually you can tell that it’s b.s. The one I got from Austin Chapman last week, though, was genuine. The guy has indeed been reading us for years, and I can find his comments to prove it. That sincerity makes me want to support his dream and goal to make a feature film even more. It also translates to his filmmaking, which has the sort of heart, passion and beauty that can only come from someone with great honesty and care. He’s also been shooting movies since he was a little kid, so the experience of doing this for a while helps, too. The new project will be his first feature, and it’s called Jester.

I should point out that Chapman is profoundly Deaf, because that’s not only why he’s been getting some media coverage about his crowdfunding effort but it’s also something that informs this film. Jester will be sort of an extended remake of his 2011 short Eleven Eleven (pictured above), in which he starred in a semi-autobiographical story of a young Deaf man falling in love. (You should watch that 13-minute work, which I’m not alone in saying has a sort of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tone, here.) Since that film was made Chapman got new hearing aids that allowed him to hear music for the first time, understandably changing his life very dramatically. Especially as an artist. The feature version will apparently incorporate that new experience. ... “When I was in the Philippines, I saw the damaging effect webcam sex tourism has on these children. Their feelings of self worth and their views on sexuality were completely distorted” says Terre des Hommes’ psychologist Guusje Havenaar.

The Terre des Hommes research team was helped by a fictitious, virtual 10-year old called Sweetie. As soon as this girl showed her virtual face in freely accessible chat programs, numerous adult men would contact her. Within seconds, Sweetie received dozens of requests for online sex.

The rich adult usually defines ‘the market’ of webcam child sex tourism. Money is scarce in many developing countries and practically every request by webcam will be conceded, however perverse. The growing popularity of the Internet and mobile telephony in developing countries makes it possible to meet the rise in demand. Poverty is the main reason why these children are being molested online. For more background information on this new phenomenon, visit www.youtube.com/sweetie.

According to the FBI and the UN, 750,000 perpetrators worldwide engage in webcam child sex tourism at any given moment. In contrast: only 6 perpetrators have been convicted since 2007. The Power of Sign Language

VIDEO [CC] - The Power of Sign Language - Human Rights Watch: Deaf children have a right to a quality education, like all other children, in a language and environment that maximizes their potential. Sign language is critical for Deaf people to be able to communicate, express themselves, and learn.

SYDNEY, AU – Deaf children have a right to a quality education, like all other children, in a language and environment that maximizes their potential. In a video released on October 18, 2013, in conjunction with a global conference in Sydney on equality for Deaf people, Human Rights Watch shows some of the challenges faced by Deaf children and young people, and the opportunities sign language education offers them.

Worldwide, Deaf children and young people are often denied an education, including in sign language. There is a lack of teachers well-trained in sign language, and in many cases parents do not know that their children have a right to go to school and that they can learn if only given the opportunity.

“Sign language is critical for Deaf people to be able to communicate, express themselves, and learn,” said Shantha Rau Barriga, disability rights director at Human Rights Watch. “Depriving Deaf people of the opportunity to learn sign language can condemn them to devastating isolation.”

Hundreds of Deaf people, their families, government officials, and disability experts have gathered in Sydney for a major conference on October 16-18 organized by the World Federation of the Deaf.

Human Rights Watch documented cases of Deaf children and young people in Nepal, China, and northern Uganda who were denied their right to education in sign language. Some Deaf children and young people interviewed did not attend school at all. Teachers and parents often have the misconception that Deaf children lack the intellectual capacity to learn.

A Deaf teacher featured in the video told Human Rights Watch: “Our disability only affects our hearing, not our minds. A Deaf child’s mind is as good as a hearing child’s mind.” ... Read more: http://www.hrw.org/news/2013/10/17/offer-deaf-children-education-sign-language

Deaf Students Protest Coach’s Replacement

EXCLUSIVE California School for the Deaf students protest coach’s replacement.

RIVERSIDE, CA - At least 90 teenagers at California School for the Deaf, Riverside, left morning classes Thursday, Oct. 31, to protest the replacement of the high school boys’ basketball coach.

Students demonstrated outside the gym over what they said was the forced resignation of coach Jeremias Valencia and the hiring of former coach David Hamilton.

“We don’t want him to be our coach,” 11th grader Miranda Murphy wrote. “We’re trying to get Jeremias back.”

The California Department of Education issued a statement from Riverside campus Superintendent Mal Grossinger.

“I can appreciate that the students in question feel strongly about who serves as their basketball coach, but this is ultimately a personnel decision that had to be made by administrators,” Grossinger said. “We will continue to encourage the students to return to class and discuss more constructive ways to share their views.”

Students had painted a banner saying “We want Coach V. back” and hung it on the chain link fence that faces Arlington Avenue along with other signs protesting the coach’s being replaced. ... Read more: http://blog.pe.com/high-schools/2013/10/31/riverside-deaf-students-protest-coachs-replacement/

Deaf Sex Predator Jailed For Probation Violation

EXCLUSIVE Released sex predator straight back in jail for breaching his parole after he had posed online as a young woman.

CHRISTCHURCH, NZ - (Stuff.co.nz) - An online sex predator has lasted just one week after his release from prison before ending up straight back in custody for contacting one of his victims by text message.

Cameron Stuart Hore, 30, was released on bail on October 22 but pleaded guilty to a charge of breaching his parole before Judge Murray Hunt in the Christchurch District Court today.

Judge Hunt remanded him to next Thursday for sentence on the breach charge, but in the meantime the Probation Service would be applying for his recall to prison anyway.

Craig Ruane appeared as defence counsel for today's appearance.

Hore was jailed for four years and one month on July 4, 2012, after being held for a long time in custody on remand on 12 charges which he eventually admitted.

He had posed online as a young woman named Sarah Ruddenklau - including posting a picture of a young woman - to carry out sexual exploitation of his young victims.

He was sentenced in the High Court on two charges of blackmail, two of obtaining credit by deception, and eight of sexual exploitation or attempted sexual exploitation.

Hore is Deaf and a sign language interpreters helped him in court today.

The victims were found after police seized Hore's computer after a complaint and analysed just one month of the the 9306 chat logs accumulated over 15 months from September 2009 to November 2010. Nine of the 14 victims traced from that month were willing to talk to the police.

Crown prosecutor Pip Currie said then it had been premeditated and planned offending using false identities to obtain personal details.

Courtroom Sign Language Prohibited Raise Concerns

EXCLUSIVE Maryland courtroom sign language restrictions raise concerns. Only the official interpreters and trial participants are allowed to use ASL and gesture.

JESSUP, MD - A judge in the trial of a Deaf man is prohibiting signing among the audience, a move that has raised concerns among some in the Deaf community.

Clarence Taylor III, who is Deaf, is accused of inappropriately touching Maryland School for the Deaf students when he was a student life counselor and dormitory aide at the school's Columbia campus. MSD also has a campus in Frederick.

Judge William Tucker of Howard County Circuit Court prohibited signs and "facial gestures" among spectators at Taylor's trial, according to a report from Capital News Service.

Only the four official courtroom interpreters and trial participants communicating with them will be allowed to sign and gesture in the courtroom.

Some advocates for the Deaf took issue with the way the decision singled out American Sign Language.

Howard A. Rosenblum, CEO of the National Association of the Deaf, said in a statement that the NAD understands the need to preserve order in the courtroom, but any restriction on communication needs to be applied evenly in any language to all spectators.

"The judge's order in this case appears to impose restrictions solely on Deaf and Hard of Hearing spectators and is unacceptable," he said.

David Martin, an assistant professor who manages ASL studies at Frederick Community College, is an MSD alumnus and has been following the trial.

He said that it would be difficult for a deaf person to avoid making gestures.

“From my perspective, you know, with a Deaf person, It's going to be a challenge for a Deaf person to have no expressions and no signing,” Martin said through an ASL interpreter.

Still, Martin said the judge's decision was fair as long as hearing people were subject to the same restrictions. ... Read more: http://www.fredericknewspost.com/news/crime_and_justice/courts/article_fbb73837-446e-5ce5-965f-c375c6542ef5.html
